Universal Pictures has officially released the first images from The Odyssey, the upcoming epic drama directed by acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan. The highly anticipated film is set to premiere in theaters on July 17, 2026.
The initial photo offers a glimpse of Anne Hathaway, an Academy Award winner, portraying Penelope, the queen of Ithaca and wife of Odysseus. Behind her stands Mia Goth, known for her role in Frankenstein, who is cast as Melantho, one of Penelope’s maids. The second image features Marvel veteran Tom Holland in the role of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope. Notably, The Odyssey marks Holland’s second major film release in 2026, as he is also expected to reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, both movies debuting in July.
Described as a mythic action epic, the film is written and directed by Nolan, based on Homer’s classic Greek poem of the same name. This project represents Nolan’s latest collaboration with Universal Pictures, following the success of Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy. Nolan and Emma Thomas are producing the film.
Leading the cast is Matt Damon, who will portray the legendary Greek hero Odysseus. The ensemble also features a star-studded lineup including Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton, and Will Yun Lee, among others.
In Homer’s original epic, Odysseus is introduced as the “king of Ithaca,” who embarks on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Believed to be dead, Odysseus’ wife Penelope and son Telemachus face numerous challenges as they deal with suitors vying for Penelope’s hand during Odysseus’ absence.
