According to a recent report from Deadline, acclaimed director Park Chan-wook is assembling an impressive cast for his upcoming film, The Brigands of Rattlecreek. The project has attracted notable talents including Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Chinese actress Tang Wei, who previously appeared in Park’s acclaimed film Decision to Leave.

The film, which Park will direct, is based on an original screenplay by S. Craig Zahler, known for Bone Tomahawk. Described as a Western thriller, the story centers on a sheriff and a doctor who seek vengeance against a band of robbers that exploit a fierce thunderstorm to terrorize a small town’s inhabitants. As with Park’s other works, the film is expected to explore themes of revenge, retribution, memory, and family.

This project has been a long-standing dream for Park, with its origins dating back nearly two decades. The script initially gained recognition by making the Black List, and Park has dedicated years to bringing it to life. Now, with an assembled cast, the film is finally moving forward.

The Brigands of Rattlecreek is set to be showcased at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, where Park has also been announced as the jury president for this year. His previous film, No Other Choice, received critical praise but was notably snubbed by the Oscars, a move many considered one of the year’s biggest awards disappointments.

Regarding the cast’s recent work, McConaughey last starred in The Lost Bus (2025), while Butler’s latest role was in Caught Stealing (2025). Pedro Pascal is upcoming in The Mandalorian & Grogu and Avengers: Doomsday, and Tang Wei’s most recent appearance was in Wonderland (2024).
