Black Bear and Artists Equity have joined forces to produce the compelling new feature film A Woman in the Sun, starring acclaimed actresses Renée Zellweger and Sissy Spacek, alongside rising star Mia Threapleton.
The film tells the intimate story of Claire Keating, a Nantucket bartender representing the island’s shrinking middle class. Over the course of a month, Claire’s life is upended when her mother falls ill and her daughter returns home. As her world begins to crack open, Claire navigates the delicate balance of vulnerability and resilience. This multi-generational narrative delves into the complexities of love, loss, and connection, capturing both the pain and humor that come with caring deeply for others.
Written and directed by WGA Award nominee Julia Cox—who gained recognition as the breakout writer of Black Bear’s acclaimed film Nyad—A Woman in the Sun is a project of significant promise. Black Bear and Artists Equity are co-financing the film, with Black Bear handling distribution in North America and the UK, and Elevation Pictures distributing in Canada. Production is scheduled to commence in September 2026.
Black Bear plans to showcase the project to international buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. Julia Cox’s previous work includes Nyad, starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster—both of whom received Oscar nominations—and she is also the writer and executive producer of the upcoming film Love of Your Life, directed by Oscar nominee Rachel Morrison and starring Margaret Qualley, Gabriel Basso, Aaron Pierre, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Catherine Keener.
