Renowned actor Jason Alexander leads a star-studded ensemble in a new indie comedy pilot titled To Life. The project was written and directed independently by David Bickel, known for producing Young Sheldon. Bickel chose to bypass the traditional studio system to craft a unique, single-camera, half-hour series that combines elements of magical realism with an intriguing, unsettling mystery.

To Life revolves around Natalie Lander’s character, an anxiety-prone woman who suddenly gains the ability to communicate with inanimate objects. According to Variety, the whimsical premise takes a darker turn as the story develops, exploring deeper themes beneath its playful surface.

In the trailer, Jason Alexander portrays a mental health professional who recommends microdosing hallucinogenic mushrooms to help Lander’s character cope with her mother’s death. After taking a larger-than-recommended dose, her home’s everyday objects begin to display animated faces. She starts conversing with them, and the phenomenon persists even after the mushrooms’ effects fade.

The cast reads like a who’s-who of beloved television and film stars. Alongside Alexander and Lander, To Life features Patton Oswalt, Richard Kind, and David Paymer. The lineup also includes John DiMaggio, Patrick Warburton, Jodi Benson, Danny Trejo, and Lainie Kazan, among others.

Bickel described the tone of To Life as “Fleabag meets Search Party.” He explained his motivation for going independent in a statement to Variety, saying, “To Life was born as a reaction to the stagnancy of Hollywood right now. Nothing is getting sold, nothing is getting made, nothing is getting done… So the pivot was: Let’s gather a group of incredibly talented people who were eager to create, and let’s make something together. Something sharp and irresistible. I think we pulled it off — it’s something we’re all incredibly proud of, and we can’t wait to share it.”

The release date for To Life has not yet been announced.
