The Family Stone Sequel: Dermot Mulroney Reveals New Details and Expected Cast Returns

Fans of the beloved family drama The Family Stone are eagerly awaiting its much-anticipated sequel. Recent updates from Dermot Mulroney shed light on the project’s progress, including a reported title and news about the returning cast members.

During a recent appearance on The Tangle podcast, Mulroney confirmed that the sequel is actively moving forward. He shared that he has already read the screenplay and that several original cast members are onboard to reprise their roles. “Everyone’s up for returning. I can be on record,” Mulroney stated. He also reflected on the emotional significance of the project, mentioning, “I’ve read it, I can’t even process yet the depth of it, especially in light of losing Diane this year.”

Mulroney paid tribute to Diane Keaton, recalling her impact on the cast and how her performance as the mother in the original film left a lasting impression. “She was so impactful on all of our lives in that mother role in that life-altering movie,” he said. He also explained that writer-director Thomas Bezucha only recently revived the idea for a sequel. “It wasn’t until last year that Bezucha re-approached this storyline,” Mulroney revealed. “He wrote it very quickly. I’ve read it. It’s brilliant, and a lot of the actors have said yes, including Craig T. Nelson and everyone in between.”

Regarding the cast, Mulroney confirmed that several familiar faces are already attached, including Craig T. Nelson, Rachel McAdams, and Luke Wilson. The original cast also featured Sarah Jessica Parker and Claire Danes.

Teasing the narrative, Mulroney hinted, “You won’t believe how s— went down the last 20 years for the Stones.” He also shared the rumored title of the sequel, stating, “I think it’s going to be entitled The Family Stone.”

Although the project remains in development, fans can look forward to more updates as filming approaches.
