Zac Efron has officially signed on to star in HBO and A24’s upcoming television adaptation of the cult classic 1987 horror film Angel Heart. This marks Efron’s first leading role in a major TV series, following his recent guest appearance as himself in The Studio Season 1.
The series will reinterpret the iconic movie, which starred Robert De Niro, and expand upon its dark, neo-noir themes. The project is penned by Zach Baylin, known for Black Rabbit, with Jonathan van Tulleken from Shogun set to direct multiple episodes. The show is described as “a new take” on the original, which was adapted from William Hjortsberg’s 1978 novel Fallen Angel.
Baylin, Efron, and Van Tulleken will serve as executive producers, along with Kate Susman for Youngblood Pictures, Marc Toberoff, Max Hjortsberg, Lorca Hjortsberg, Alice P. Neuhauser, Joe Hipps for Cut To, Stuart Manashil, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss.
The series’ plot centers around a down-and-out New York City paparazzo who specializes in finding and photographing elusive individuals. He is hired by a mysterious client to locate a missing woman. As he delves deeper into the investigation, he uncovers a web of secrets involving powerful elites and potentially supernatural forces that may be connected to her disappearance.
The original Angel Heart film was written and directed by Alan Parker. Despite mixed reviews upon release, it has since gained recognition as an underrated cult classic, boasting an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s cast also included Mickey Rourke, Lisa Bonet, and Charlotte Rampling.
