Dan Stevens’ 2014 action-horror hit, The Guest, is inspiring an unexpected new chapter with a fresh movie from A24. Fans have been curious about whether this upcoming film is connected to the original after seeing its trailer. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), new information confirmed that the two films are indeed linked, though not in the way many anticipated.
According to Empire Online, director Adam Wingard revealed at SDCC that his new horror-action film, Onslaught, is connected to The Guest, both featuring Dan Stevens. However, the nature of this connection is more nuanced than a straightforward sequel.
Like The Guest, Onslaught is directed by Wingard, based on a story by Simon Barrett, and stars Dan Stevens. The plots also share common themes, focusing on government-created super soldiers who are nearly impossible to kill. This led many fans to believe Onslaught was a direct follow-up.
Stevens clarified that the relationship between the films is more complex. “It is a spiritual sequel,” he explained, “that lives in the same universe.” Wingard added that Onslaught is his third and final installment in a trilogy that begins with You’re Next, continues with The Guest, and concludes here. While the story is set in the same town as The Guest, Stevens does not reprise his role as David. Instead, Adria Arjona stars as a former Army sniper protecting her family, with Stevens playing a mysterious scientist involved in the super-soldier program.
Wingard also shared why he decided to make Onslaught after years of directing big-budget MonsterVerse movies. “I’ve been making all these blockbuster films for so long, and I thought, what do I want to do? Spoiler alert: I want to make a film where Dan Stevens licks people’s feet,” he joked.
In addition to Stevens and Arjona, the film features Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson, Michael Biehn, Drew Starkey, Rebecca Hall, and Maurice Greene.
Onslaught is scheduled to hit US theaters on September 4, 2026.
