Clueless fans can celebrate as Paramount+ has officially ordered a sequel TV series to the beloved 1995 romantic comedy. The show was initially in development at Peacock, but the streamer dropped the project earlier this year, paving the way for its new home on Paramount+.
The upcoming series will pick up 30 years after the original film, with Alicia Silverstone reprising her iconic role as Cher Horowitz. Silverstone will also serve as an executive producer, bringing her signature charm back to the beloved character. Filming is set to begin in Los Angeles in 2027, marking a nostalgic return for the film, which was originally distributed by Paramount Pictures.
“Clueless is coming home,” said Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+. “Thirty-one years ago, Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her style, wit, and optimism, helping make Clueless a box office hit and pop culture icon. We’re proud to film this series in Los Angeles, honoring its roots and showcasing the city’s talented crews and cast.”
The series storyline will explore Cher navigating motherhood as her daughter reaches her teenage years and starts high school. Director Amy Heckerling, who helmed the original film, will join Silverstone as an executive producer. The show is being developed by writers and executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, alongside Jordan Weiss. Robert Lawrence, who produced the original movie, is also returning as an executive producer. CBS Studios is producing the project.
According to reports from Variety, the series is being developed as a six-episode miniseries; however, neither Paramount+ nor CBS has officially confirmed this format.
This isn’t the first time Clueless has made its way to television. A TV adaptation debuted on ABC in 1996 and later moved to UPN, where it aired for three seasons. An earlier pitch centered on a series following Dionne Davenport, played by Stacey Dash, but that version was never produced.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the original film was recently screened at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, where the cast reunited. The film was also added to the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
The new Clueless series will debut exclusively on Paramount+, though a release date has not yet been announced.
