We introduce you to Dichotomy, an exciting new pop duo formed by iconic LGBTQ+ influencers Icon Abbly and Marcy Jumper. Dichotomy officially released their debut single, “High Fashion.” The track resurrects the peak Y2K club era, blending the nostalgic energy and infectious pop hooks of Britney Spears, Kesha, Katy Perry, and early Lady Gaga.
To kick off the launch, the duo celebrated the release last night with an exclusive, high-energy event at Sweetwater in West Hollywood. The celebration brought together a packed room of fellow musicians, top music industry professionals, and influential creators who came out to support the group’s transition into the music space.
The core of Dichotomy lies in their striking visual and thematic contrast, which has already captivated a massive audience online. Icon Abbly is widely recognized for her dark, moody, goth aesthetic, while Marcy Jumper is known for her bright pink, hyper-feminine, Barbiecore style. Together, they bring a built-in audience of over 350K combined social media followers, seamlessly merging their massive digital footprints with modern queer pop culture. With this strong visual identity and a nostalgic debut track, Dichotomy is positioned to become the breakout pop duo of the summer.
1. You both come from very different worlds as influencers—how did the idea for Dichotomy come about, and what made you decide to officially form a pop duo together?
We’ve always been surrounded and driven by music. Ironically enough we met in college a capella not knowing we’d be making our own music 5 years later! For both of us, music and performing has always been our end goal. We just didn’t anticipate doing it together. Abbly started making music back in 2022 and Marcy was always a part of it in one way or another. Rather than seeing our drastically different aesthetics as a reason why we shouldn’t make music together, we realized that’s forefront of our artistry.
2. The name “Dichotomy”; what does the name mean to you both, and how does it reflect your dynamic as a duo?
The word dichotomy refers to two directly opposing entities which is exactly what we are. We found ourselves using this word when describing our aesthetic before we even decided on a name and it stuck!
3. Icon, you’re known for your dark, moody goth vibe, while Marcy brings this bright, hyper-feminine Barbiecore energy. How does this visual and thematic contrast shape your music and creative direction?
It’s exciting and challenging immersing ourselves into each other’s worlds! Going completely out of our comfort zones to tell a story and create art is how we grow together and individually as artists.
4. Your debut track “High Fashion” perfectly captures that peak Y2K club era. What inspired the song, and how did you blend influences from Britney Spears, Kesha, Katy Perry, and early Lady Gaga into your sound?
“High Fashion” lives in Marcy’s bright bubblegum pop world! We’ve both been heavily inspired by these pop diva’s, singing and dancing to their music in our bedrooms growing up and creating this track was all about having fun and paying homage to our influences.
5. As two strong personalities with very different styles, what does your songwriting and production process look like? Do you ever clash creatively, or does the contrast make the music stronger?
In any collaboration there’s going to be give and take from both sides, which is the beauty of collaboration. Considering how different our aesthetics are we are bound to clash but that makes it that much more nuanced. We’ve connected on such a deep level that in our creative process we often find ourselves on the same wavelength. We appreciate and admire each other’s artistry making it effortless for us to create within both worlds.
When we approach a new song, we typically begin by deciding on which world that song lives in. Which then plays a part in all aspects of the project; songwriting, production, visual elements, etc.
6. You celebrated the release with a high-energy party at Sweetwater in West Hollywood. What was the atmosphere like that night, and what moment stood out to you the most?
It’s always nerve wracking sharing art with people for the first time but it was electrifying seeing everyone sing and dance along! It was important to us to host our release party at Sweetwater given that it’s a lesbian bar and we knew that was the perfect audience for our debut.
7. As prominent LGBTQ+ creators transitioning into music, what does it mean to you to bring your queer identities and perspectives into the pop music space right now?
With the state of our world, it’s more important now than ever to show and spread queer joy! Love, light, and happiness are all forms of resistance. Now is the time to show the world no matter what you have to say about our community, we will continue to create and spread love and light.
8. You already have a combined audience of over 350K followers. How are you planning to leverage your existing platforms and communities to grow Dichotomy as a music act?
We are so grateful for the community that we’ve built online with like-minded individuals. They inspire us to continue to connect, create, and represent our community. We hope that our music and artistry resonates and reaches an even larger audience!
9. What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced while making the jump from influencers to recording artists, and what’s been the most exciting or rewarding part so far?
The biggest challenge is all the new hats we now get to wear. Whereas before we were just content creators now we are producers, performers, choreographers, editors, managers, etc. As independent artists it can be extremely difficult and stressful to balance all the different roles, but we’re endlessly grateful that we even have the opportunity to create freely.
10. “High Fashion” feels like it’s positioned to be one of the songs of the summer. What kind of moments or experiences do you hope people have while listening to it?
This song is truly an anthem to let loose, have fun, and not take things so seriously! Go buy those new pair of shoes because you deserve it. Go out dancing with your friends because it’s liberating. In a world that seems so hopeless, it’s imperative to experience joy.
11. What can fans expect next from Dichotomy? Are there more singles, an EP or album on the way, or any dream collaborations or performances you’re hoping to make happen?
Fans can expect a plethora of new music that we can’t wait to release! We just announced our second single “Lobotomy” coming out on August 7th. Whereas “High Fashion” lived in Marcy’s world, we’re excited to invite you into Abbly’s world with this new single! You can presave HERE!
