Jenna Ortega and Natalie Portman’s upcoming film, The Gallerist, has secured distribution rights and a confirmed release date. The dark comedy, announced in 2024, is directed by Cathy Yan, known for her work on the DC film Birds of Prey.
The movie made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. According to Deadline, Roadside Attractions and Vertical have acquired the U.S. distribution rights, with the film scheduled for a theatrical release on December 4, 2026.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Art Basel Miami, The Gallerist follows Portman as Polina Polinski, a gallery owner struggling with financial difficulties and a breakup. Jenna Ortega plays Kiki, Polina’s assistant. The storyline revolves around Polina’s desperate attempt at survival, which leads her to conspire to pass off an accidental corpse as her debut art show centerpiece. This act of deception spirals into chaos as influencers and police get involved, raising questions about fame, crime, and morality.
The cast also features Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Sterling K. Brown, Zach Galifianakis, Daniel Brühl, and Charli XCX. Notably, Ortega reunites with Catherine Zeta-Jones, who played her mother in the series Wednesday.
Directed by Cathy Yan from a screenplay by James Pedersen, The Gallerist is produced by Portman, Ash Sarohia, Sophie Mas, Jonathan King, Tom McCarthy, Rae Baron, and Zola Elgart Glassman, with MRC serving as the production company.
Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff, co-presidents of Roadside Attractions, along with Peter Jarowey, CEO of Vertical, praised the film, stating, “Cathy Yan’s wildly original film was a winner for us at Sundance; she assembled a phenomenal cast led by Natalie Portman’s standout performance. It’s as fun as it is terrifying.”
Looking ahead, Portman will star in Good Sex, while Ortega is set to lead Klara and the Sun later in 2026.
