John David Washington, best known for his starring role in Tenet, has been announced as part of the cast for a new supernatural horror movie titled Mime. While his specific role remains under wraps, recent exclusive updates have shed light on some details about the film.
According to Deadline, Mime is set in a New York City apartment complex during a heatwave blackout. The story was conceived by writer Stephen Herman, who crafted it from an original concept. Production is scheduled to commence in the spring.
The film will be directed by Nikyatu Jusu, a Sierra Leonean-American filmmaker known for her acclaimed debut feature Nanny, which garnered 11 awards including the Sundance Grand Jury Prize. Her portfolio includes short films and an episode of Two Sentence Horror Stories.
Producers for Mime include Washington himself, along with Matt Tolmach, Camila Grove, and Scott Derrickson. Sony Screen Gems secured the rights to distribute the film, outbidding Amazon and Searchlight Pictures. As of now, a formal logline has not been released.
Prior to his acting career, John David Washington was a professional football player. He first appeared on screen in a cameo alongside his father, Denzel Washington, in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. He returned to acting in 2015, playing Ricky Jerret in HBO’s Ballers, which aired until 2019. Since then, he has starred in films such as Love Beats Rhymes, Monsters and Men, Monster, The Old Man & the Gun, Beckett, Amsterdam, The Creator, Malcolm & Marie, and The Piano Lesson.
Washington’s breakout role came with his portrayal of Ron Stallworth in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, which earned him Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. He also received the Saturn Award for Best Actor for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.
Currently, John David Washington is set to appear in the off-Broadway tech thriller Disruption at the Pershing Square Signature Center in Manhattan, running through October 2026.
