THR is reporting that Paramount is returning to the water with a follow-up to its 2019 sleeper hit Crawl, casting Mason Gooding and Emily Rudd in a new survival story set in a flooded urban landscape. The film will be directed by Alexandre Aja, who helmed the original, and is set to begin production later this month in Hungary.
The original Crawl starred Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper as a daughter and father trapped in a Florida home, pursued by aggressive alligators during a Category 5 hurricane. The film was a commercial success, grossing $91.5 million on a budget of less than $14 million. The upcoming movie shifts the setting to New York City, where gators emerge in the streets and sewers following a devastating hurricane.
The screenplay is penned by Jason Harry Pagan, Andrew Deutschman, Aja, and Gregory Levasseur. Production is led by Craig Flores, Sam Raimi, and Alexandre Aja, with Levasseur and Zainab Azizi serving as executive producers.
Mason Gooding, known for his breakout role in Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart and his appearance in the Scream franchise, is currently seen in the Netflix comedy Hours alongside Kevin Hart and in Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex, which is in theaters. Emily Rudd, the female lead in Netflix’s record-breaking live-action adaptation of One Piece, is also set to star in Brian Duffield’s Whalefall for 20th Century Studios, alongside Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin, scheduled for release in October. She has previously appeared in Amazon’s Hunters and Netflix’s Fear Street franchise.
