Trailer: Helen Mirren’s Patricia Highsmith Faces a Dangerous Stranger in ‘A Talent for Murder’

The official trailer for A Talent for Murder has arrived, offering a chilling first look at the upcoming thriller starring Helen Mirren and Alden Ehrenreich. The film is set to premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival in September before arriving in theaters later this year.

Bleecker Street and LD Entertainment will release A Talent for Murder exclusively in theaters on October 23, 2026. The film is directed by Anton Corbijn, with a screenplay by Joanna Murray-Smith based on her 2014 stage play Switzerland.

The story follows Edward Ridgeway, a young man working for a New York publishing house who travels to Switzerland with an unusual assignment. His mission is to track down acclaimed novelist Patricia Highsmith and convince her to write another installment in her famous Tom Ripley series. However, as Edward attempts to persuade the reclusive author, it becomes increasingly apparent that he may have motives beyond simply reviving the beloved character.

The film draws inspiration from the real-life Patricia Highsmith, whose 1955 psychological thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley introduced the notorious Tom Ripley. Highsmith’s work has had a lasting impact on crime fiction and cinema. Her debut novel, Strangers on a Train, was also famously adapted into Alfred Hitchcock’s acclaimed 1951 film of the same name.

The new trailer begins with Mirren portraying an older Highsmith, calmly smoking as an ominous message appears on screen: “Some crime stories can only come from the most dangerous of minds.”

The footage then introduces Ehrenreich as Edward, the enigmatic young publisher who has arrived in Switzerland determined to convince Highsmith to return to the world of Tom Ripley. But what initially appears to be a straightforward professional meeting quickly takes a darker turn.

As Edward and Patricia begin developing a new story together, hints emerge that Edward is concealing something far more disturbing. Their creative partnership soon becomes a dangerous game of manipulation, with both characters seemingly keeping secrets of their own.

The trailer offers a series of unsettling glimpses into their increasingly volatile relationship, building toward a frightening confrontation as hidden motives and long-buried secrets begin to surface.

Alongside Mirren and Ehrenreich, A Talent for Murder features Olivia Cooke and Juliet Stevenson. With its psychological tension, mysterious characters, and connection to one of crime fiction’s most celebrated authors, the film promises to deliver a suspenseful new take on Patricia Highsmith’s dark literary legacy.
