ESPN Films’ upcoming documentary Portrait of an Artist: Stephen Curry will bring the NBA superstar’s historic shooting achievement to the big screen, opening exclusively in IMAX theaters on Oct. 9.
Directed by Gotham Chopra, the film chronicles Curry’s pursuit of 4,000 career three-pointers while exploring the creativity, precision and relentless discipline behind his success on the basketball court. The project is produced by IMAX, Religion of Sports, Unanimous Media and NBA Entertainment, with Disney handling distribution.
Filmed at San Francisco’s Chase Center, the documentary uses 21 IMAX proprietary cameras to capture Curry before and during his historic matchup against the Sacramento Kings. Curry entered the game needing just two three-pointers to reach the milestone, turning an already significant night into the centerpiece of the film.
But Portrait of an Artist goes beyond the numbers. The documentary examines Curry’s approach to basketball as a form of artistry, drawing comparisons and insights from acclaimed creative figures including Viola Davis, Rick Rubin, Patti Smith and Jon Batiste.
“With Portrait of an Artist, we wanted to tell a story that goes beyond breaking a record on the court, while exploring the creativity, discipline and mindset behind the journey,” Erick Peyton and Curry of Unanimous Media said in a statement. “This film is our way of capturing what it feels like to experience Stephen’s performance in real time, especially for those who haven’t had or may never have the chance.”
The pair added that they were proud to partner with Religion of Sports, IMAX and Disney/ESPN to bring the experience to audiences around the world.
Chopra said the film aims to portray Curry not simply as an elite athlete, but as an artist continually searching for his next masterpiece.
“This film is all about capturing Steph Curry, an athlete and artist who is always chasing a new masterpiece,” Chopra said. “With the court as his canvas, we wanted to show the world the relentless creativity and discipline that drives one of the greatest to ever play the game.”
The director also expressed excitement about bringing the documentary to IMAX audiences across the country.
Chopra is the co-founder of Religion of Sports, the Los Angeles-based media company he established with former NFL quarterback Tom Brady and television personality Michael Strahan. The company has produced a range of sports-focused projects examining the athletes, cultures and stories behind competition.
With its combination of unprecedented IMAX footage, Curry’s historic milestone and perspectives from some of the world’s most influential artists, Portrait of an Artist: Stephen Curry offers an intimate look at what makes one of basketball’s greatest shooters so extraordinary.
