Netflix is turning the familiar story of a family hiring a nanny into something considerably more unsettling with Not a Stranger, a new Turkish psychological drama arriving later this month.
The streaming service has unveiled the official trailer for the series, offering a glimpse at a seemingly ordinary childcare arrangement that gradually takes a disturbing turn. What initially appears to be the perfect solution for a new mother soon develops into a frightening battle for control of a young child.
At the centre of the story is Funda, a new mother who has put her painting career on hold following the birth of her daughter. Although she is extremely protective of her baby and struggles with the idea of leaving her in someone else’s care, Funda eventually decides that hiring a nanny is the only way she can begin returning to her artistic career.
Enter Nazlı.
At first, Nazlı appears to be exactly what Funda and her husband İlker need. She settles into the household and gradually earns the family’s confidence, becoming an increasingly important presence in their everyday lives.
However, the trailer suggests there is considerably more to Nazlı than meets the eye.
Her growing attachment to Funda’s daughter becomes increasingly uncomfortable, particularly when Nazlı encourages the young girl to call her “Mom.” As İlker begins to question the nanny’s behaviour, the family’s decision to welcome her into their home starts to look like a potentially devastating mistake.
Nazlı’s inability to have children appears to be an important part of the story, with her desire to become a mother seemingly developing into an obsession. The trailer hints that she may not simply want to care for Funda’s daughter — she may want the child for herself.
That puts Funda and İlker in an increasingly dangerous situation as they attempt to uncover the truth about the woman they allowed into their family.
Not a Stranger stars Elçin Sangu as Funda and Ozan Dolunay as İlker. The cast also includes Melis Sezen, Cemal Hünal, Efe Taşdelen, Arbil Tabur, Esra Şahin and Nihan Okutucu.
Created by Tuğba Doğan, the Turkish series combines psychological suspense and family drama, with the story seemingly built around questions of trust, motherhood and the frightening secrets that can hide behind an apparently familiar face.
The series is based on the Turkish title Seni Tanıyorum and will be available to stream on Netflix from September 17, 2026.
With its unsettling nanny storyline and increasingly tense family dynamic, Not a Stranger looks set to deliver a slow-burning psychological mystery for viewers looking for their next suspenseful Netflix series.
