Keanu Reeves could be heading into another major action franchise, with the John Wick star set to lead a new thriller adaptation based on Oliver Lowe’s upcoming novel Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller. Independent production company The Arena has announced the project and released a teaser for the film.
The Arena, founded by veteran producer Erik Feig, has acquired the rights to Lowe’s upcoming novel and will produce the adaptation with Reeves attached to star. Kill Current is expected to launch a new thriller series centered on CIA operative Jon Hendricks.
The story follows Hendricks, a burned-out CIA officer who is drawn back into the field after the death of a protégé he once trained. His mission to seek revenge sets the stage for what could become a globe-trotting action franchise.
Lowe’s novel is scheduled to be published by Zando in May 2027, making the upcoming film one of the studio’s early major projects.
Reeves will also take on producing duties alongside Alexandra Grant. Molly Stern and Zando will serve as executive producers, while Kill Current will become the first project produced under Reeves and Grant’s new banner, Two Dragonflies.
Speaking about the project, Reeves expressed his excitement about developing the character and launching the new production company with Grant.
“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to develop the character Jon Hendricks with these wonderful collaborators and that this is the project that launches Two Dragonflies, which I share with my partner, Alexandra Grant.”
According to Zando CEO Molly Stern, Kill Current will blend contemporary geopolitical issues with the fast-paced action expected from a modern thriller. The story will explore subjects including semiconductors, global supply chains, technological warfare and information warfare while following complex characters across an international setting.
Feig also praised Reeves’ ability to anchor intelligent action franchises, making the actor a natural fit for the project.
“Keanu Reeves is a singular talent and synonymous with the kind of intelligent action franchises we are aiming to make,” Feig said, adding that the team is thrilled to collaborate with Reeves and Grant.
With Reeves already synonymous with high-profile action films thanks to the John Wick franchise, Kill Current could give the actor another opportunity to build a long-running character and potentially launch an entirely new action series.
