The Prison Break franchise is heading back behind bars, with Hulu offering fans their first glimpse at its upcoming reboot.
Set within the same universe as the original hit series, the new Prison Break will introduce an entirely new group of characters while taking the franchise in a fresh direction. The first teaser gives viewers an early look at the dangerous prison environment at the centre of the story.
Rather than revisiting the story of Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows, the new series follows Cassidy Collins, played by Emily Browning, a former soldier who becomes a corrections officer at one of America’s most dangerous prisons. Her decision to take the job is driven by someone she loves, placing her in an increasingly dangerous situation.
The ensemble also features Drake Rodger as Tommy, an inmate who has spent a decade behind bars, Lukas Gage as Jackson, a politician beginning his first congressional campaign, and Clayton Cardenas as Michael “Ghost.” JR Bourne, Georgie Flores and Myles Bullock also feature in the main cast.
The reboot has continued to expand its cast, with performers including Margo Martindale, Donal Logue, Lili Taylor and Ray McKinnon joining the project in prominent roles. More recently, Sam Trammell, Sean Bridgers, Chris Coy, Kerry Bishé, Robin Weigert and Jean Louisa Kelly were announced for recurring roles.
The series comes from Elgin James, known for Mayans M.C., who serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer, while original Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring is also returning as an executive producer. Several producers from the original series are likewise involved.
Although the new series features a different cast and storyline, it remains connected to the world established by the original Prison Break. There has even been speculation about appearances from familiar faces, although no original cast member has been officially confirmed to return.
The original Prison Break premiered on Fox in 2005 and became a major television hit, following Michael Scofield’s elaborate plan to break his wrongly convicted brother Lincoln out of prison. The series ultimately ran for five seasons, including its 2017 revival.
With the first teaser now offering a glimpse of what lies ahead, Hulu’s new Prison Break appears ready to put a new spin on the franchise while retaining the high-stakes prison drama that made the original such a fan favourite.
A release date has yet to be announced, with the series currently expected to arrive on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally.
