Steven Spielberg’s next horror project is officially on the calendar. The upcoming film adaptation of The Mandela Catalogue, based on the popular YouTube analog-horror series created by Alex Kister, now has a confirmed release date.

According to Deadline, The Mandela Catalogue will hit theaters on June 9, 2028. The movie is being produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, Scott Stuber’s United Artists, and Amazon MGM Studios.

Kister will direct the feature and co-write the screenplay with Tyler Clifton. The pair will also serve as producers alongside Holly Bario for Amblin, Aaron B. Koontz for Paper Street Pictures, and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists.

The original Mandela Catalogue series is set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, where a mysterious invasion threatens the community. At the center of the story are shape-shifting entities known as Alternates, which infiltrate society and manipulate computer systems under the influence of a sinister false depiction of the Archangel Gabriel.

Since its debut, the series has become one of YouTube’s most recognizable analog-horror franchises, surpassing 100 million views on the platform. Its latest installment, released earlier in May, has already accumulated more than 640,000 views.

The upcoming film arrives as YouTube-born horror properties continue to make an impact in Hollywood. The success of projects such as Backrooms and Obsession, directed by Kane Parsons and Curry Barker respectively, has demonstrated the growing potential of internet-created horror. Both films reportedly became major box-office successes this year, collectively earning more than $700 million worldwide.

The Mandela Catalogue is also just one of several projects currently in development involving Spielberg. The legendary filmmaker is set to collaborate with Weapons and Resident Evil director Zach Cregger on The Flood. Spielberg’s most recent release was Disclosure Day, which became his highest-grossing film since 2018. He is also working on a sequel to Ready Player One.

With its distinctive analog-horror roots and a rapidly expanding fanbase, The Mandela Catalogue could become another major example of an internet-born franchise making the jump to the big screen.
