The spirit of Point Break is making its way to the small screen, with AMC officially moving forward with a television adaptation of the iconic 1991 action thriller.
Set in the present day, the new series will take place 35 years after the events of the original film and introduce audiences to a fresh group of characters operating within the world of high-stakes crime and extreme sports.
Rather than directly retelling the story of Kathryn Bigelow’s cult classic, the series will follow a new heist crew connected to the infamous Ex-Presidents gang. The original movie famously centred on FBI agent Johnny Utah, played by Keanu Reeves, as he infiltrated a group of adrenaline-seeking surfers led by Patrick Swayze’s charismatic Bodhi.
The television version is being developed by David Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers, with Alcon Entertainment behind the project. Kalstein and Rogers are also set to serve as showrunners and executive producers.
The decision to expand Point Break into a series comes after the film’s enduring reputation as one of the defining action movies of the 1990s. Its combination of surfing, skydiving, undercover crime and philosophical clashes between its central characters has helped the movie maintain a strong following decades after its original release.
The new series will have the difficult task of establishing its own identity while remaining connected to the mythology that made the original Point Break so memorable. With the story jumping forward more than three decades, there is plenty of room to explore how the world established by the film has evolved.
AMC has not yet announced casting details or a premiere date for the series. However, Point Break is currently expected to debut in 2027.
