Megan Lawless is set to take on her next major role, with the Obsession star joining the upcoming independent romantic comedy Crushed.
Lawless will lead the film as Joss, a hopeless romantic who repeatedly finds herself developing feelings for people who don’t feel the same way. Determined to change her luck in love, Joss embarks on a search for the one crush who could finally turn into the perfect relationship.
Crushed marks the feature directorial debut of Stephanie Donnelly, with production currently underway in Chicago.
The project comes as Lawless continues to build momentum following her role in Curry Barker’s breakout horror film Obsession. In the movie, she played Sarah alongside Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston, portraying a close friend of Johnston’s Bear who harbours feelings for him as his increasingly disturbing relationship with Nikki spirals out of control.
Obsession was acquired by Focus Features for $15 million following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section. The film subsequently became a major theatrical success, giving Lawless increased visibility with audiences.
Beyond Obsession, Lawless has appeared in the acclaimed drama The Hate U Give, starring alongside Amandla Stenberg and Sabrina Carpenter, as well as Hulu’s limited series The Girl From Plainville.
With Crushed, Lawless is moving into a very different genre, trading the unsettling world of Obsession for a romantic comedy centred on the frustrations, excitement and unpredictability of searching for love.
As production continues in Chicago, further casting and release details for Crushed are yet to be announced.
