Following Jason Momoa’s departure from Sony Pictures’ planned Helldivers movie, the studio and director Justin Lin are moving quickly to find a new lead.
Sources tell Deadline that Alan Ritchson is in talks to star in the feature adaptation of Arrowhead Game Studios’ popular video game franchise. Lin remains attached to direct the film, while Sony Pictures has not commented on the casting discussions.
If a deal is finalized, Ritchson would portray one of the elite Helldivers, with additional casting expected to be announced later. Plot details are currently being kept under wraps.
Sony’s Helldivers movie is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 10, 2027.
The Helldivers franchise launched in 2015 as a cooperative twin-stick shooter. Players take on the role of members of the Helldivers, an elite military force tasked with protecting Super Earth and battling humanity’s enemies across the galaxy.
The franchise grew significantly with the release of Helldivers 2 in 2024. The sequel puts players in the boots of the Helldivers as they fight to spread peace, liberty and Managed Democracy using an arsenal of powerful and explosive weapons. The game sold more than 12 million copies across PlayStation 5 and PC within its first four months and has since expanded to Xbox.
Hutch Parker is producing the film alongside PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash. Lin is also producing through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner.
