Netflix has released the official trailer for Ray Gunn, the upcoming animated neo-noir sci-fi mystery from acclaimed filmmaker Brad Bird. The film features Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson among its star-studded voice cast.
Ray Gunn will debut in select theaters on December 4 before arriving on Netflix on December 18. The movie is based on an original story by Bird, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind animated favorites such as The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and The Iron Giant.
Set in the futuristic metropolis of Metropia, Ray Gunn follows its titular hero, voiced by Rockwell, who is described as the city’s last human detective. In a world where humans and aliens live alongside one another, Gunn takes on a mysterious case involving Venus Nova, an enigmatic pop sensation voiced by Johansson.
The newly released trailer offers a striking introduction to Metropia, showcasing a sprawling futuristic city filled with towering skyscrapers, flying cars, aliens, and jetpacks. The preview begins with Gunn arriving at a murder scene before introducing the larger mystery that will drive the story.
Gunn’s latest case takes an unexpected turn when Nova becomes caught up in a high-profile scandal. As the detective investigates and gets closer to the singer, he becomes increasingly entangled in a dangerous conspiracy. The trailer also features a series of fast-paced action sequences, hinting at the film’s blend of mystery, adventure, and futuristic spectacle.
Bird has cited several legendary filmmakers as influences on the movie’s visual style. Speaking with TheWrap, he specifically mentioned Michael Curtiz, director of Casablanca, and praised the filmmaker’s dynamic approach to camera movement and visual composition. Bird has also drawn inspiration from directors including David Lean, Orson Welles, and Alfred Hitchcock.
Alongside Rockwell and Johansson, the voice cast includes Tom Waits, Bobby Cannavale, Alan Tudyk, and Patton Oswalt, among others.
With its futuristic setting, detective-noir premise, and Bird’s distinctive animation style, Ray Gunn is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s major animated releases.
