Mason Thames is adding another comedy project to his rapidly expanding film career, with the young star set to headline Narcs, a new coming-of-age comedy in development at Sony Pictures.
The 19-year-old actor, who has built a strong following through projects including The Black Phone and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, has signed on to lead the upcoming feature. Sony is currently keeping the film’s story details under wraps, meaning audiences will have to wait to discover exactly what kind of trouble its title characters will find themselves in.
Narcs will mark the feature directorial debut of John Phillips, who has established himself as a writer in the R-rated comedy space. His previous credits include Good Boys, Dirty Grandpa and No Hard Feelings.
The screenplay was initially written by Jordan and Justin Shipley, the creators of the TBS comedy series Wrecked. Phillips and longtime collaborator Gene Stupnitsky have subsequently worked on a rewrite.
Stupnitsky is also producing the movie through his Big Name Entertainment banner, with Robert Lamonaca and Phillips attached as executive producers.
Mason Thames Continues to Expand His Range
Thames has been steadily moving beyond the genre that first put him on the map. He broke through as the lead of Scott Derrickson’s 2021 horror film The Black Phone, returning for its 2025 sequel.
He then stepped into one of his biggest roles to date as Hiccup in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. Thames is expected to return for the upcoming sequel, which is currently scheduled for June 11, 2027.
Comedy has also become an increasingly visible part of the actor’s recent work. Thames appeared in Incoming and has recently starred in projects including Idiots and Nimrods. The latter follows three friends who embark on a chaotic road trip after mistakenly believing their band has landed a spot opening for Green Day on New Year’s Eve.
Beyond Narcs, Thames has several major projects ahead, including Caine, a John Wick spin-off directed by and starring Donnie Yen.
With Sony backing the project and Phillips stepping behind the camera for his first feature, Narcs gives Thames another opportunity to explore comedy while continuing his transition into increasingly prominent studio roles.
Sony has yet to announce a release date or production timeline for Narcs.
