Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Black Doves Season 2, bringing back Keira Knightley as Helen Webb and promising even more action, danger, and political intrigue.
The hit spy thriller returns to Netflix on Thursday, November 5. Created by Joe Barton, Black Doves follows Helen, the wife of the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Defence, who secretly works as a spy for the mysterious Black Doves organization.
The new season picks up with Helen continuing her dangerous double life, secretly passing government information to her employers. With her husband now preparing to become prime minister, Helen finds herself closer than ever to the center of political power — and at greater risk of being exposed.
Things become even more complicated when Helen reunites with Sam, played by Ben Whishaw. After Helen’s handler, Mrs. Reed, becomes caught up in a plot that threatens her position within the Black Doves, Helen and Sam are once again forced to work together. Their investigation soon pulls them into a deadly conspiracy filled with new threats and unexpected twists.
The trailer hints at the escalating danger facing the pair as they attempt to uncover the truth while navigating a web of espionage, political secrets, and betrayal.
Speaking about Helen’s situation, creator Joe Barton explained to Tudum that she has effectively reached the highest level possible for a spy, describing her as “the spy at the heart of government.” However, Helen’s position quickly becomes unstable when her handler, Reed, played by Sarah Lancashire, disappears.
“She’s literally the spy at the heart of government, so she’s kind of reached the pinnacle of where she can get to,” Barton said. “But at the same time as that happens, her handler, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), goes missing. So Helen’s in this very precarious situation, suddenly, and without her professional ally.”
Sam is also facing his own problems in the new season. According to Barton, the character finds himself “at a low point” while dealing with legal trouble and becoming involved in a dangerous bargain with a mysterious figure who helps him avoid prison.
Alongside Knightley and Whishaw, Black Doves Season 2 features Sarah Lancashire, Gabrielle Creevy, Ella Lily Hyland, Kathryn Hunter, Ambika Mod, Babou Ceesay, Sam Riley, Neve Campbell, and others.
With Helen’s political position becoming increasingly complicated and Sam caught up in his own dangerous circumstances, Season 2 looks set to expand the series’ world of espionage, secrets, and conspiracies when it arrives on Netflix.
