Chris Hansen is taking another swipe at Primetime with the release of a new documentary about his life and career.
Hansen’s TruBlu streaming network has unveiled the first trailer for I’m Chris Hansen, a documentary centered on the To Catch a Predator host. The trailer arrived Friday, September 26, coinciding with the theatrical release of Lance Oppenheim’s Primetime, the Robert Pattinson-led crime thriller inspired by Hansen’s work.
The timing appears to add another layer to Hansen’s ongoing criticism of the film, which he has publicly discussed since its trailer was released.
I’m Chris Hansen carries the tagline, “Over three years in the making; learn who the REAL Chris Hansen is.” The trailer promises an inside look at Hansen’s career and personal perspective, featuring exclusive interviews and archival footage.
Hansen has been particularly outspoken about Primetime. In a recent video, he shared his reaction to the film, describing it as bizarre and disconnected from his experiences investigating predators.
“It was so bizarre and so in and out of reality,” Hansen said. “Obviously I’m not objective because the character is, you know, me, but it was so detached from reality or anything I’ve experienced then or now doing the investigations. I’m not sure what the point of it was.”
His criticism dates back to before the film’s theatrical release. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month, Hansen said he believed the filmmakers were aiming for a much darker and more dramatic portrayal of his work.
“I think it’s an insult to the thousands of men and women who work hard every day to protect children from predators,” Hansen said. “They turn something that is very positive, very challenging and not without risk into what is essentially a horror film.”
With Primetime now in theaters, Hansen’s own documentary is positioned to offer a competing perspective on the man behind the investigations and the career that made him a household name.
An official release date for I’m Chris Hansen has yet to be announced.
