Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter have joined Tom Holland in the upcoming untitled Fred Astaire biopic, with Holland set to portray the legendary actor, singer and dancer.
The project marks a major development nearly five years after Holland first announced that he would take on the role of Astaire.
Qualley will portray Adele Astaire, Fred Astaire’s sister and longtime performance partner, while Carpenter has been cast as Ginger Rogers, Astaire’s celebrated dance partner and frequent screen co-star.
Before Fred Astaire became one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars, he and Adele built successful careers performing together on Broadway and London’s West End. Astaire later rose to international fame through his film partnerships with Rogers, becoming one of the most influential performers in the history of dance and musical cinema.
Paul King, best known for directing Paddington and Wonka, will direct the biopic. The film is being produced by Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connor for Pascal Pictures; Ben Holden and Josh Hyams for Lightbulb Pictures; and Holland for Billy17.
Ava Astaire McKenzie, Fred Astaire’s daughter, is also supporting the project. Her son, Tyler McKenzie, will serve as a consultant and co-producer. With Holland taking on one of Hollywood’s most legendary performers and Qualley and Carpenter portraying two important figures in Astaire’s career, the film will explore the life and legacy of a performer whose influence continues to shape dance and cinema.
