Robert Eggers’ highly anticipated period folk-horror film Werwulf has unveiled its second trailer, offering another chilling look at the filmmaker’s latest descent into darkness. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and a talented ensemble cast.
Released on September 26, 2026, the new trailer arrived on the night of the September full moon—a deliberate choice that continues a unique marketing tradition for the film. The first trailer was also released to coincide with a full moon in June.
The latest footage delivers several unsettling sequences featuring Depp, Dafoe, and other members of the cast, further teasing the film’s brutal and atmospheric take on werewolf mythology. Depp and Dafoe are both familiar faces in Eggers’ filmography, having previously appeared in his acclaimed 2024 gothic horror film Nosferatu.
Eggers previously explained his decision to align the trailers with the full moon in an interview with Empire in June 2026. According to the filmmaker, his research uncovered historical references connecting werewolves to lunar cycles.
“For the werewolf nerds out there, it’s commonly stated that the full moon’s connection to werewolves began in cinema,” Eggers said. He added that he discovered an older English text, predating the period in which Werwulf is set, that describes werewolves being affected by the moon’s cycle, along with similar references in Icelandic literature.
Written and directed by Eggers, Werwulf is set in the 14th century and follows a mute peasant who is cursed to transform into a werewolf whenever the full moon rises. Taylor-Johnson plays the central character, a quiet family man whose life is transformed by the terrifying curse. The screenplay was co-written by Eggers and Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón.
Focus Features describes the film as “a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within,” promising what could be Eggers’ most visceral and haunting film yet.
The cast also includes Ralph Ineson, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Ned Dennehy, Kate Dickie, Valeriia Karaman, Tony McCarthy, Hannah Harpin, Jan Bijvoet, Preslav Shipkaliev, and Jack Morris.
Werwulf is produced by Robert Eggers, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Garrett Bird, and Sjón. Chris Columbus, Eleanor Columbus, and Bernard Bellew serve as executive producers.
Following its atmospheric promotional campaign, Werwulf is set to arrive exclusively in theaters on December 25, 2026.
