Girl Tones reveal the title track off of their upcoming debut album Precious and shed a tender light on much of the record’s inspiration. On “Precious” the band takes a break from the muscular rock songs they’ve become known for and opt instead for a vulnerable ballad. Without compromising any of their raw power along the way, the song distills their complicated feelings about life lived and grief into four minutes. With layers of ascendant vocals over sparse piano, elegant strings, and emotionally charged drums, the album’s title track is a farewell to their grandmother — Stream. “Our Abuelita passed away in 2020, and the song came from experiencing the grief of losing a loved one,” singer Kenzie reveals. “She always referred to us as her ‘Precious’. The handwriting on the cover is actually from a card she sent to me. We worked on the album for a while, and it’s so precious to us. Around the time we said goodbye to her, I started dating my now-husband. As much as the song is about losing a loved one, it’s also about gaining a new loved one.” Today’s single also arrives with an official video directed by Emily Buchwald. Putting on your radar multi-hyphenate performer and recording artist Veronica Powers who introducing a new chapter of her career with “Old Hollywood,” the first single from her upcoming debut EP. Recorded at RealSongs, the renowned Hollywood studio founded by legendary songwriter Diane Warren, the song is a personal tribute to Los Angeles, Hollywood’s golden age, and the family legacy that helped shape Powers as an artist.
A Los Angeles native and SAG-AFTRA performer, Powers has worked in entertainment since the age of seven, building a diverse career spanning acting, music, comedy, improvisation, voice-over, content creation, and production. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Southern California, she also trained at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts through the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.
Entertainment runs deep in Powers’s family. Her father, Emmy Award-winning sound designer and composer Travis Powers, introduced her to music, recording, and the studio at an early age. Her maternal grandmother, Jeanne Gray McDonald, was an Old Hollywood actress, singer, and pioneering radio and television personality who became the first woman to host her own radio show, The Jeanne Gray Show. She later created, wrote, produced, and hosted The Woman’s Voice, earning an Emmy nomination. Powers’s great-grandfather, Patrick Murphy, worked in special effects during Hollywood’s silent-film era, including on Charlie Chaplin’s sets.
Although Powers never met her grandmother or great-grandfather, their photographs and family stories gave her a lasting connection to Hollywood history. That legacy, combined with growing up in Los Angeles, became the inspiration behind “Old Hollywood.”
Powers imparts, “I’ve always felt like I was born in the wrong era. Growing up in Los Angeles, I was captivated by the glamour, artistry, and magic of Old Hollywood, and that connection feels especially personal because of my grandmother, Jeanne Gray McDonald. Although I never had the chance to meet her, I grew up with her photographs and stories from my mom, making that world feel like part of my own history.”
The song reflects Powers’ fascination with the women, fashion, films, and larger-than-life personalities of Hollywood’s golden age while embracing the energy of contemporary Los Angeles. Her influences range from Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe, and Dolly Parton to Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, and Whitney Houston. “Old Hollywood” also captures the philosophy behind Powers’s emerging body of work: confidence, glamour, humor, self-expression, and the freedom to be unapologetically yourself.
“At its heart, it’s about embracing who you are, dreaming big, being unapologetically over-the-top, and channeling a little Old Hollywood magic into the modern day,” Powers says.
Powers began writing songs at a young age, penning her first song, “You’ve Got Something,” as an anthem of self-belief. She later performed it for the Special Olympics, an experience that reinforced the themes of confidence and empowerment that continue to inform her music.

Starling is a four-piece alternative band born and based in Los Angeles, creating music with a soft heaviness that moves from grunge to songwriter to shoegaze without settling into any one of them. Combining warped, bedroom-built production with angular leads and rich vocal melodies, the band writes toward a general yearning — for contentment, a person, a place — that gives the songs their vulnerable, wide-open feel.
Lead singer and guitarist Kasha Souter Willett started the project alone in 2023, with no clear sense of what it would become. Erik Sathrum Johnson, Grace Rolek, and Gitai Vinshtok joined in May 2024, and the full band released its debut EP, 2324, that September. Their follow-up, Forgive Me,, arrived via Sunday Drive Records in 2025.
Starling’s new EP, Plexus, is another entirely self-made record, produced by the band and mixed by drummer Erik Sathrum Johnson. It was previewed across four singles over the course of the year. “571,” out in February, came together fast — tracked half-live in a single day — and turns on the fear that looking too closely at something good will make it disappear, and the pull to make the most of it while it lasts.
The double single “Anti-sonata” / “Of Today & Canon” followed in March: “Anti-sonata” broke from the band’s usual live-first writing process, built and rebuilt entirely in the studio, with Erik shaping an intro track around a poem of Kasha’s after the main song’s lyrics and melody went through several complete overhauls before landing; “Of Today & Canon” is the EP’s instrumental turn. “See the Water” arrived in July and “Sunbeam” grew out of a single image — a woman standing in water, lit by the sun’s reflection — that Kasha built a story around; once the rest of the band built out their parts, it became an instant standout, and one fans have been asking to hear released for over a year.
With Plexus, Starling continues to shape every sonic detail themselves, turning a year of songs written and rewritten into another record that’s unmistakably theirs.
Experimental folk band Foot Ox today shares “Church (in a box),” the second single off their forthcoming album, Topanga Canyon, out October 23 via Lauren Records.

Built around an almost motionless drumbeat, wandering bass, and sighing pedal steel, “Church (in a box)” is a love song for a landscape – specifically, the rural Arizona that songwriter Teague Cullen once called home. Broken glass, empty yards, windblown dust, and orange sunsets drift through the song as Cullen looks back on a place whose beauty and ugliness have become impossible to separate.
“It’s about looking back and realizing you really loved a place, even the ugly parts,” Cullen says.
That sense of place runs throughout Topanga Canyon, an album born after Cullen was invited to spend a week recording at the canyon home Germaine Dunes shares with Buck Meek and their dog, Ringo. With the session already on the calendar, Cullen wrote the record over the course of a single spring before bringing the songs to California to record mostly live with a loose collective of friends and musicians from Kisser, AJJ, Pigeon Pit, iji, Lake, and Foot Ox’s Oregon lineup.
Engineered by Dunes and Carly Bond, the sessions unfolded throughout the house and on its front porch, leaving birds, airplanes, wind, conversation, and the natural ambience of the canyon embedded in the recordings. What began as a Foot Ox album became something more communal: a document of a particular place, a particular group of friends, and a brief moment shaped by trust, intuition, and chance.
Blank Instrument, the musical project of Boorloo/Perth-based singer-songwriter Kim Franklin, announces her new single, ‘Know Nothing’, set for release Friday, September 25. This track marks the third single from her forthcoming debut album, ‘Jumping at Ghosts’, which is out in just a month’s time on Friday, October 23.
As the third single from ‘Jumping at Ghosts’, ‘Know Nothing’ continues Blank Instrument’s deeply personal songwriting journey while shifting the focus more directly onto Franklin herself. Warm Hammond organ, acoustic guitar and subtle vocal harmonies create a reflective country-folk atmosphere, while lively drums add a brighter, more buoyant edge.
Where earlier singles ‘Brand New’ and ‘Green and Blue’ were shaped in part by the memory of her late friend Julie, whose generosity continued after her passing and helped fund the project, ‘Know Nothing’ turns inward, exploring Franklin’s relationship with intuition, perfectionism and decision-making.
Inspired by her tendency to search for the “right” choice, the track reflects a shift in mindset as she learns to accept uncertainty and embrace the idea that there can be several workable paths rather than one perfect answer. Franklin states:
“Some decisions aren’t simple or easy. I’ve struggled with the idea of making the ‘right’ decision. This is, I’ve realised recently, because I’m a perfectionist. While it’s often seen as a positive trait and the perfect job interview answer, living with it can be difficult. There is no amount of information that can make a decision easier, when you’re looking for a level of certainty that’s impossible to find.”
New York City bands Native Sun and Psymon Spine have joined forces for a remix of “This Mess,” a centerpiece of Native Sun’s debut album, Concrete Language. Released one year ago via TODO Records, Concrete Language found fans at Rolling Stone, NPR, Consequence, Stereogum, DORK, Line of Best Fit, CLASH, and more.
Of today’s release, Psymon Spine shares, “Native Sun have one of the most powerful live shows going. We wanted to find a way to capture the soundtrack for the excitement you feel in the crowd right before they rip into a song. The main idea was recording a found of ‘pre-song sounds’ to work from. We sat there and recorded and sampled two hours of unintentional guitar noises.”
New York band MX LONELY are excited to share another preview of their forthcoming EP, PERFECT HOUSE, available October 2, 2026 via Julia’s War Recordings. “Ex Rae Punk (feat. Caitlin Starr)” arrives today with vocalist/syntheist Rae Haas as the song’s namesake, channeling breakup energy into a cathartic and pummeling track about the cyclical nature of meaningful relationships. They sing “I’ll look around for you” over riffs that build atop of each other, eventually reaching a layered maelstrom of guitars.
“‘Ex Rae Punk’ is about loving someone so hard you end up looking around for the pieces of someone for the rest of your life,” Rae explains. “It’s a reimagining of the first song I ever wrote in 2019 with Jake when we used to be called ‘v0idb0ys’. I briefly dated someone who would constantly refer to me as their “ex rae” (x-ray) after we stopped seeing each other. I realized quickly that they never really saw me at all (see right through you, see right through me),”
“It really laid the groundwork for the themes of ownership and heartbreak throughout “DOG” (the 1st and only v0idb0ys record). The opening riff from our first voice memo recordings didn’t really fit the world of the record, and we opted for a more folky rendition for the album, but there was always something a little bittersweet about putting the “punk” version on the shelf. Last winter, I was playing the song for Caitlin Starr on acoustic guitar in her living room, and we found these natural harmonies really intuitively; she just really got the song, and I knew we had to revive the song with her voice and an iconic feral Caitlin guitar solo.”
the Chicago punk rock bands Rise Against and Alkaline Trio released a split single tackling iconic songs from the other’s catalog: Rise Against takes on Alkaline Trio’s “Private Eye,” while Alkaline Trio delivers their rendition of Rise Against’s “Re-Education (Through Labor).” The release comes on the eve of the band’s embarking on an extensive US tour together.
The two bands have been intertwined since long before either of them achieved the scale they are known for today. From watching each other grow from basement shows to global stages, this collaboration acts as a homecoming for the two bands.
