HBO has released the official trailer for The Pet Cemetery Murders: The Ghost Story, a gripping three-part true-crime documentary series that explores a decades-old murder mystery in Louisiana. Blending a disturbing real-life investigation with chilling accounts of paranormal activity, the series promises to uncover the secrets surrounding a case that remained unsolved for years.
Premiering October 11 on HBO and HBO Max, the documentary centres on the 1985 murder of Dorothy Lou Thompson, whose mysterious disappearance and subsequent death left investigators searching for answers. While the title may evoke memories of Stephen King’s iconic horror novel Pet Sematary, this series explores a real-life tragedy with an extraordinary twist.
The newly released trailer introduces viewers to the unsettling circumstances surrounding Thompson’s disappearance and the investigation that followed. Initially, authorities struggled to piece together what had happened, with searches of her property revealing no obvious signs of a struggle.
Thompson was eventually discovered dead, chained in the Mississippi River. Despite extensive investigations and interviews with potential witnesses, police were unable to solve the case, leaving her murder unresolved for decades.
However, the mystery took an unexpected turn in 2009 when a man came forward with new information about the murder, claiming to have encountered Thompson’s ghost at a pet cemetery. His extraordinary account would ultimately bring renewed attention to the case and prompt Detective John Daron to revisit the investigation.
The trailer offers glimpses of interviews with law enforcement officials, local journalists, historians and people who knew Thompson. It also features footage connected to the investigation, alongside unsettling testimony about the alleged paranormal encounters.
As the investigation unfolds, the documentary promises to explore a complicated web of family secrets, suspicious deaths and alleged connections to organised crime. These revelations add further intrigue to a case that has remained shrouded in mystery for decades.
Directed by Philip Cairney, The Pet Cemetery Murders: The Ghost Story is produced by award-winning filmmaker Jonathan Chinn, with Oscar-winning producer Simon Chinn serving as executive producer. The series comes from Lightbox, the production company behind acclaimed documentaries including The Princess and Tina.
With its combination of real-life crime, unanswered questions and eerie supernatural accounts, the series looks set to offer a different perspective on the traditional true-crime documentary.
The Pet Cemetery Murders: The Ghost Story premieres October 11 on HBO and HBO Max. The remaining two episodes will air on the following Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
