Italian director Riccardo Milani’s La Vita Va Cosi (also known as Life Is Life) is a heartfelt comedy-drama that explores the conflict between tradition and progress, while examining the importance of family, community and staying true to your beliefs.
Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Sardinia, the film tells the story of Efisio Mulas (Giuseppe Ignazio Loi), an elderly shepherd who refuses to sell his beloved property to a wealthy businessman, Giacomo (Diego Abatantuono), who plans to transform the beautiful coastline into a luxurious holiday resort.
What initially appears to be a straightforward property dispute gradually develops into a much bigger battle about personal values, economic opportunities and the preservation of a way of life. At the heart of the film is Efisio, whose determination to protect his land makes him an intriguing central character. His quiet resistance is particularly compelling, especially as he faces increasing pressure to accept an offer that could change his life. Rather than being motivated by money or personal gain, his attachment to the land is deeply rooted in his history, memories and connection to his family.
The film benefits considerably from its beautiful Sardinian setting. The stunning coastal scenery provides a wonderful backdrop to the story, serving as a reminder of exactly what is at stake. The contrast between the untouched natural environment and the proposed luxury development also reinforces the film’s central themes.
Director Riccardo Milani successfully incorporates moments of humour into an otherwise serious story, giving the film a distinctly Italian charm. However, the balance between comedy and drama doesn’t always work as effectively as it could. At nearly two hours, the film also takes its time developing the story. Although the subject matter is interesting, some sections could have benefited from tighter pacing, particularly when the narrative revisits familiar arguments surrounding the proposed development.
Nevertheless, La Vita Va Cosi has plenty of heart. Its underlying message about protecting what matters most is easy to appreciate, and the film offers a thoughtful reminder that progress isn’t always measured by financial success. Sometimes, holding on to the things that give our lives meaning is just as important as embracing the future.
