A fractured relationship between a teenager and his mother lies at the heart of Hulu’s upcoming coming-of-age mystery series Phony, which raises a disturbing question: what if the person who comes home after a traumatic event isn’t really who they claim to be?
Starring Sam Nivola and Connie Britton, Phony follows Sonny Cook, a teenager whose close relationship with his mother, Ellen, begins to unravel following a car accident. What starts as a seemingly ordinary family tragedy soon turns into a mystery when Sonny becomes convinced that the woman who returns home is not actually his mother.
The trailer introduces Sonny as a teenager who considers himself incredibly fortunate to have Ellen in his life. He describes her as his “favorite person,” emphasizing just how strong their bond is before the accident changes everything. Ellen is also Sonny’s high school principal, making their relationship an important part of both his home and school life.
Following the crash, Sonny wakes up in a hospital and soon realizes that something feels different. As he tries to return to his normal routine, he becomes increasingly suspicious of his mother. Sonny believes she has been replaced by an impostor, but convincing everyone else proves far more difficult.
The trailer plays up Sonny’s growing paranoia through subtle changes in Ellen’s appearance and behavior. Small details that might otherwise seem insignificant become increasingly unsettling from Sonny’s perspective, leaving him questioning everything he knows about his mother. As his fears intensify, Sonny longs for the life they had before the accident, saying, “I just want everything to be… like it used to be.”
Alongside its central mystery, Phony blends elements of comedy and coming-of-age drama as Sonny struggles with family, identity and a world that suddenly seems unfamiliar. The half-hour series was created by Nick Paley, who serves as co-showrunner alongside Anthony King. Paley also wrote and directed the first episode.
Britton stars as Ellen, with Nivola portraying Sonny. The supporting cast includes Meera Syal, Grace Brennan, Mahaela Park, Maliq Johnson and Colter Lee. Syal plays Sharla, a private investigator whom Sonny turns to as he attempts to uncover the truth about his mother.
Produced by 20th Television, Phony is set to premiere October 20, 2026, on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. The series will explore themes of identity, family and adolescence as Sonny tries to make sense of the increasingly strange changes surrounding him.
Britton also serves as an executive producer alongside Paley, King, Charlie Alderman, Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg.
