Amazon MGM Studios is developing A Murder to Remember, a feature film adaptation of Brynn Kelly’s Audible Original, with Grey Gardens director Michael Sucsy attached to write and direct.
Described as a razor-sharp romantic thriller, A Murder to Remember follows an American art expert with an obsession with Jane Austen and a broke but charismatic British lord. After a drunken night at a crumbling English abbey, the unlikely pair wake up convinced they witnessed a murder.
The problem? There is no evidence that a crime took place—and no one believes their story. As they begin investigating what they think they saw, the pair find themselves racing to uncover the truth before whoever is responsible can silence them.
Kelly’s audiobook, which has been described as Knives Out meets a contemporary Jane Austen story, was released by Audible in February 2024.
Sucsy developed the project alongside Jackie Levine at Audible and Moritz Polter of Windlight Pictures before the package was acquired by Amazon MGM. He will direct from his own screenplay and executive produce through his HungryDuck Productions. Kelly and Audible’s Rachel Ghiazza will also executive produce.
Levine and Marshall Lewy of Audible are producing alongside Polter and Cosima Degler of Windlight Pictures.
Sucsy is perhaps best known for creating, co-writing, producing and directing HBO’s acclaimed drama Grey Gardens, starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. The film earned 17 Emmy nominations and won six, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie. It also received a Golden Globe, while Lange won an Emmy and Barrymore took home both a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for their performances.
Following Grey Gardens, Sucsy directed Sony’s romantic drama The Vow, starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. The film grossed approximately $196 million worldwide against a reported $30 million budget.
He later directed MGM’s Every Day, based on David Levithan’s bestselling novel, and helmed episodes of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why.
Sucsy is represented by Paradigm, Anonymous Content, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
