After years of waiting for a follow-up to Crazy Rich Asians, fans are finally getting another chapter in the story of Rachel Chu and Nick Young — but not in the form of a second movie. HBO has officially greenlit a sequel series, bringing back several familiar faces from the hit 2018 romantic comedy.

The upcoming eight-episode drama will reunite Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh and Ronny Chieng, giving audiences another opportunity to revisit the glamorous world of Singapore’s wealthiest families. The series will continue the story following the events of the original film, which concluded with Rachel and Nick celebrating their engagement.

Wu and Golding will reprise their roles as Rachel Chu and Nick Young, while Chieng returns as Nick’s extravagant cousin, Eddie Cheng. Yeoh will also return as Eleanor Young, Nick’s formidable mother, in a recurring role.

From blockbuster movie to HBO series

Directed by Jon M. Chu, the original Crazy Rich Asians became a major cultural and box-office success upon its 2018 release. Based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel, the film followed Rachel, an American economics professor who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick, only to discover that he belongs to one of the country’s wealthiest and most influential families.

Rachel’s introduction to Nick’s extravagant lifestyle quickly becomes complicated by family expectations, social pressures and Eleanor’s disapproval of their relationship. The film earned widespread attention for its predominantly Asian cast and its celebration of Asian representation in mainstream Hollywood.

Rather than continuing the story through a traditional theatrical sequel, the new series will have more room to explore its characters and their complicated relationships across eight hour-long episodes.

Original creative team returns

The project will also reunite key members of the original film’s creative team. Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 movie, will serve as showrunner and executive producer, working alongside Kwan and Chu. Producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are also returning.

The series draws inspiration from Kwan’s bestselling book trilogy, which continues with China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. The novels expand the world introduced in the first instalment, opening the door to more family drama, lavish lifestyles and complicated romantic relationships.

Although the new series marks a significant change from the long-discussed film sequel, the television format offers an opportunity to explore the characters and their stories in greater depth.

When will Crazy Rich Asians return?

HBO has officially ordered the eight-episode series, with production expected to begin in 2027. However, an official premiere date has yet to be announced.

For fans who have spent years wondering whether Rachel and Nick’s story would continue, the news finally delivers a long-awaited answer. With the original stars and several key creative figures back on board, Crazy Rich Asians is preparing to return with another lavish chapter — this time on the small screen.
