Paramount Pictures is bringing the world of Cyberpunk 2077 to the big screen, with a live-action feature film based on CD Projekt Red’s hugely successful video game franchise now in development.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for his work on the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, is attached to the project alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish video game developer behind the original game. While details surrounding the film’s storyline, cast and release date remain under wraps, the adaptation marks another major step in the entertainment industry’s growing interest in video game properties.
First released in December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 transports players to Night City, a sprawling metropolis set in a dystopian future where advanced technology, cybernetic enhancements and powerful corporations shape everyday life. Players take on the role of V, a mercenary navigating a dangerous world of crime, corporate conspiracies and life-changing decisions.
Despite a difficult launch that attracted widespread criticism over technical issues, the game has since undergone significant improvements and evolved into a major commercial success. Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, cementing its place as one of CD Projekt Red’s most successful releases.
The franchise has also expanded beyond gaming, most notably through Netflix’s acclaimed animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which introduced Night City to an even wider audience. The upcoming live-action film will provide another opportunity to explore the franchise’s distinctive combination of futuristic action, complex characters and thought-provoking themes.
CD Projekt Red has expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Paramount on the project, with joint CEO Michał Nowakowski highlighting the studio’s shared creative ambitions for the franchise. Further details are expected to be announced when the companies are ready to reveal more about their plans.
The adaptation arrives as Hollywood continues to invest in established video game properties, following the success of projects such as HBO’s The Last of Us, Prime Video’s Fallout and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Paramount is also developing a film based on the Call of Duty franchise, while its upcoming Street Fighter adaptation further demonstrates the studio’s interest in gaming-related entertainment.
With Night City offering a richly detailed setting and a world filled with compelling stories, the Cyberpunk 2077 movie has considerable potential to appeal to longtime fans and newcomers alike. However, with the project still in its early stages, audiences will have to wait for further announcements before learning how Paramount plans to translate the game’s distinctive universe into a live-action cinematic experience.
