YouTube star Matthew “MatPat” Patrick is bringing one of the internet’s most unsettling indie horror games to the big screen, with Blumhouse developing a feature film adaptation of Amanda the Adventurer.

Announced during Blumfest at New York Comic Con, the project marks the beginning of a multi-project partnership between Patrick and the horror powerhouse, with plans to explore more indie horror games and internet-born horror properties.

Patrick, best known for creating Game Theory and building the wider Theorist network, is developing the adaptation alongside Blumhouse. Epic Pictures CEO Patrick Ewald will also serve as a producer, joining Blumhouse founder Jason Blum and Patrick on the project.

Originally released in 2023, Amanda the Adventurer is a first-person puzzle-horror game that transforms the familiar format of a children’s television programme into something far more sinister.

The story follows Riley Park, who discovers a collection of mysterious VHS tapes while exploring the attic of their late Aunt Kate’s house. The tapes feature Amanda the Adventurer, an apparently innocent children’s show starring Amanda and her timid sheep companion, Wooly. However, as Riley continues watching, it becomes increasingly clear that something is deeply wrong, with the characters seemingly communicating directly through the television.

What initially appears to be harmless children’s entertainment gradually develops into a disturbing mystery, blending nostalgic visuals, psychological tension and unsettling found-footage elements. The contrast between the cheerful cartoon presentation and the darkness lurking beneath it has helped establish the game as a standout title among indie horror fans.

The upcoming film will look to translate that eerie premise into a feature-length cinematic experience, although significant details remain under wraps.

According to reports, Patrick and Blumhouse are already in discussions with potential writers and directors. No casting announcements, production timeline or release date have been revealed at this stage.

The Amanda the Adventurer adaptation is also just the first project under Patrick’s new arrangement with Blumhouse. While additional titles have yet to be announced, the partnership signals the studio’s growing interest in internet-driven horror and independent games with passionate online audiences.

Blumhouse has already found considerable success bringing video game horror to cinemas with Five Nights at Freddy’s, demonstrating the commercial potential of adapting games that combine recognisable imagery with unsettling storytelling.

With Amanda the Adventurer, the studio has another opportunity to turn an interactive nightmare into a big-screen horror experience. For fans of the original game, the central question will be whether the film can preserve the mystery and creeping dread that made those seemingly innocent VHS tapes so disturbing in the first place.

Further details about the Amanda the Adventurer movie are expected to emerge as development continues.
