‘Glee’ Is Making a Comeback as Disney+ and Hulu Greenlight Reboot

The halls of William McKinley High School could soon be filled with music once again, with Glee officially returning for a new chapter more than a decade after the beloved musical comedy-drama wrapped its original run.

Disney+ and Hulu have greenlit a reboot of the hit series, bringing the iconic franchise back into the spotlight. Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, Glee became a defining television phenomenon of the late 2000s and early 2010s, blending musical performances with storylines exploring identity, relationships, acceptance and the challenges of growing up.

The original series premiered on Fox in 2009 and ran for six seasons before concluding in 2015. Set at a high school in Lima, Ohio, it followed the members of the New Directions glee club as they navigated teenage life, personal struggles and their ambitions to succeed on stage.

Throughout its run, Glee developed a passionate international fanbase, transforming its musical covers into chart successes and helping introduce a new generation of viewers to an eclectic mix of pop, rock and Broadway favourites.

Ryan Murphy Returns to the Glee Universe

The reboot comes after Murphy revealed in September that he had completed a script with fellow co-creators Falchuk and Brennan, the writing team responsible for the show’s first two seasons.

Murphy also disclosed that he had been speaking with approximately 10 members of the original cast about the possibility of returning. While those conversations reportedly generated enthusiasm, the extent of their involvement in the new series remains unclear.

The announcement marks a significant development for fans who have spent years speculating about whether the musical series could make a comeback. With its original creators involved in developing the project, the reboot has the opportunity to revisit the show’s distinctive combination of outrageous comedy, emotional storytelling and ambitious musical numbers.

Will the Original Cast Return?

One of the biggest questions surrounding the revival is which familiar faces could step back into their characters’ shoes.

Lea Michele, who portrayed aspiring Broadway star Rachel Berry throughout the original series, is reportedly set to reprise her role, according to Variety. Heather Morris, known for playing Brittany S. Pierce, and Chord Overstreet, who portrayed Sam Evans, have also shared social media posts hinting at their possible involvement.

However, further casting details have yet to be officially announced, leaving fans wondering whether other beloved characters will return.

The original ensemble also featured Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Amber Riley, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Dianna Agron and Harry Shum Jr., among others.

Any return would also need to acknowledge the show’s history and the loss of cast members Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera, whose performances as Finn Hudson and Santana Lopez remain central to the series’ legacy.

What Could the Glee Reboot Be About?

Although the storyline has not yet been revealed, the revival has plenty of possibilities. A new generation of students could take centre stage at McKinley High, allowing the series to explore how teenage life, social media, music and conversations around identity have evolved since the original show premiered.

Alternatively, familiar characters could return to reconnect with their roots, offering a look at where life has taken them since their time in the glee club.

The original Glee was known for tackling subjects that were often underrepresented in mainstream television while celebrating individuality and the importance of finding a community. A revival could build on that legacy while reflecting the cultural conversations shaping a new generation.

For now, details surrounding the plot, additional casting, production schedule and premiere date remain under wraps. No official trailer or release date has been announced.

With Glee returning to Disney+ and Hulu, fans have plenty of reasons to start warming up their vocal cords. Whether the reboot introduces an entirely new generation of performers or reunites familiar faces, the series has another opportunity to bring its signature mix of music, drama and unapologetic theatricality back to television.
