A classic fighting game franchise is heading towards the big screen, with Samurai Spirits set to receive a film adaptation from The Arena, the production company founded by producer Erik Feig.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Laeta Kalogridis, known for creating Netflix’s Altered Carbon and co-writing Shutter Island, has been tapped to write the screenplay. The project marks another major step in Hollywood’s ongoing push to bring iconic video game franchises to cinemas.
Originally released in arcades in 1993 by Japanese gaming company SNK, Samurai Spirits — known internationally as Samurai Shodown — built its reputation on intense, weapon-based combat set against the backdrop of feudal Japan. The franchise features an eclectic roster of warriors, samurai and ninjas, with battles that emphasise precision, timing and the devastating impact of every strike.
Unlike many traditional fighting games, the series places a strong emphasis on armed combat, giving its characters distinctive weapons and fighting styles. Its enduring legacy has led to numerous instalments over the decades, including a new entry released in 2019.
The upcoming film is being developed by The Arena, which is expanding its slate of projects based on properties from SNK. The company is also receiving financial backing from the gaming giant as it works to bring its catalogue of established franchises to new audiences.
While plot details remain under wraps, the involvement of Kalogridis brings an experienced screenwriter to the adaptation. Her previous credits include Altered Carbon, Shutter Island and Terminator Genisys, giving the project a writer with experience across science fiction, action and psychological storytelling.
The Samurai Spirits adaptation is part of a broader effort by The Arena to develop screen projects inspired by SNK’s fighting game universe. Other titles in development include Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting, signalling the company’s ambition to establish a wider collection of adaptations drawn from the publisher’s extensive gaming library.
No director, cast members or release date have been announced for Samurai Spirits at this stage. Further details about the film’s story and production are expected as development progresses.
With its distinctive warriors, sword-driven combat and rich feudal Japanese setting, Samurai Spirits offers plenty of cinematic potential. The challenge will be translating the franchise’s fast-paced fighting action and memorable characters into a compelling feature film for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
