With shimmering vocals, sun-soaked production and candid storytelling, DAYLA returns with ‘No 1’, a sensual new single exploring the complexities of modern romance, the allure of the unknown and the moment fantasy gives way to reality.
Originally written in Los Angeles before taking its final shape in the aftermath of a six-year relationship, ‘No 1’ captures the emotional highs and lows of navigating love in an era of uncertainty. From the unexpected warmth of a winter spark to the intoxicating illusion of an endless summer, the track unpacks the dopamine-fuelled “what ifs” of limerence, ultimately confronting the realisation that sometimes, a crush is simply a lack of information.
The single also introduces a more unfiltered side of DAYLA, embracing a beautifully raw anti-hero persona fuelled by rebellious spirit and neurodivergent energy. Its striking artwork, featuring DAYLA in a star costume, nods to her teenage indie sleaze roots while celebrating the unapologetic individuality that defines her artistry.
At its heart, ‘No 1’ is about recognising when someone isn’t matching your investment and finding the courage to walk away. Rather than getting caught in the cycle of uncertainty, DAYLA encourages listeners to redirect that energy towards themselves and their creativity.
“I want anyone dating someone who isn’t matching their investment to let go. Walk away and channel that spicy energy into something creative—into yourself instead,” she shares.
For DAYLA, songwriting became a way to make sense of the confusion and contradictions of modern dating, transforming an emotionally complicated experience into something playful, sensual and liberating.
“I get frustrated by the general lack of commitment from people and how easily my brain would feed on ‘what ifs’ instead of facing the real disappointment in people. Narrating the memory of an impromptu night that turned into something quite magical was soothing my confusion for it to not see it bloom into something more.
“As we get older, we think we’ll navigate love better, or stop falling into the mind games trap. But at the end of the day, we all just want to love and be loved in return. Writing ‘No 1’ was my way of turning that raw, uncertain feeling of modern dating into a fun, sensual song that lets you surrender to the unknown.”
The release follows last month’s euphoric comeback single ‘TV-90s Kid’, which marked the end of a six-year hiatus from music. The track was met with a warm reception, earning support from Fault Magazine, Loud Women, Ones To Watch and The Most Radicalist, who remarked, “It’s a miracle DAYLA hasn’t blown up yet (or maybe she will now).”
A dreamy dose of art-pop, ‘TV-90s Kid’ offered a nostalgic embrace for millennials navigating the relentless realities of adulthood in 2026. Pairing weightless vocals with hazy, atmospheric production, the track provided a moment of escapism amid life’s growing complexities.
Born and raised in Paris, DAYLA moved to London in the early 2010s to immerse herself in the city’s vibrant music scene. Her early work centred on ensemble-based performances, taking her to prestigious venues including Union Chapel, the Barbican and the Southbank Centre, where she performed alongside acclaimed artists such as Imogen Heap and Elena Tonra of Daughter.
Alongside her early solo releases, DAYLA explored a more experimental sonic landscape as a core member of NYX Electronic Drone Choir. The collective’s immersive approach to voice, electronics and deep ambient soundscapes saw her contribute to their debut album, NYX, as well as the collaborative project Deep England with Gazelle Twin.
During her time with the collective, DAYLA performed at Rewire Festival, opened for electronic pioneer Nicolás Jaar, appeared at the Centre Pompidou, London Design Festival and London Fashion Week, and joined Sigur Rós for a performance at BST Hyde Park.
Her earlier releases attracted support from The Times, Wonderland, Clash Magazine and BBC 6 Music, establishing her as an artist unafraid to explore the boundaries of sound and storytelling. Since then, her musical direction has evolved considerably, moving beyond her earlier ambient and downtempo influences towards a more immediate, expressive and emotionally vivid form of art-pop.
Now, with ‘TV-90s Kid’ reigniting her musical journey and ‘No 1’ revealing a more sensual, self-assured side, DAYLA is stepping into a new chapter defined by honesty, experimentation and fearless self-expression.
Blurring the boundaries between lived experience and dreamlike escapism, DAYLA transforms the messiness of modern life into music that feels intimate, playful and deeply human. With ‘No 1’, she reminds us that even when romance fails to meet our expectations, there is still something powerful to be found in letting go.
