Jessica Biel is preparing to bring a new perspective to 7th Heaven, with the upcoming reboot aiming to preserve the family-focused spirit of the original series while tackling the challenges facing today’s teenagers and parents.
The actress, who played Mary Camden in the long-running family drama, is returning to the franchise as an executive producer through her production company, Iron Ocean Productions. With the project in development at CBS Studios, Biel has shared how the new series will approach contemporary family life while creating an environment where its cast and crew can do their best work.
Speaking on Collider Ladies Night, Biel explained that the reboot will explore issues that the original series could only address within the limitations of its time. These include technology, school pressures, bullying, drugs and alcohol, with the intention of portraying such experiences in a more direct and realistic way.
“We have less limitations now,” Biel explained, emphasising that the creative team still wants to preserve the original show’s family-friendly identity. However, the new iteration will not shy away from difficult subjects simply to maintain the more restrained approach of its predecessor.
Originally premiering in 1996, 7th Heaven followed the Camden family as they navigated the challenges of raising seven children. Led by Reverend Eric Camden and his wife, Annie, the family became the centre of stories exploring relationships, growing up, personal responsibility and the importance of community. The series ran for 11 seasons before concluding in 2007.
For Biel, the appeal of revisiting the property lies in its ability to offer something that families can experience together. As a parent herself, she recognises the difficulty of finding television that appeals to younger viewers without sacrificing meaningful storytelling.
The reboot is expected to retain themes of family, faith and community while reflecting the realities of a different generation. Biel has indicated that the goal is to deliver stories that feel grounded in the present day without losing the optimism that helped define the original series.
Beyond the material appearing on screen, Biel is also focused on establishing a supportive production environment. Explaining why she intends to remain behind the camera rather than reprise her role as Mary Camden, the actress said she wants to create a space where performers feel comfortable being emotionally vulnerable and exploring challenging material.
For Biel, that responsibility is an important part of producing. She believes actors and crew members need to feel supported and protected to deliver their strongest work, particularly when a project requires emotionally demanding performances.
The reboot was first reported to be in early development in 2025, with Queen Sugar’s Anthony Sparks attached as showrunner and executive producer. DeVon Franklin is also executive producing alongside Biel and her Iron Ocean producing partner Michelle Purple.
Although the project remains in development, the new 7th Heaven has the opportunity to revisit a familiar television concept through a contemporary lens. With its emphasis on honest conversations, family relationships and a more supportive creative environment, the reboot aims to introduce the franchise to a new generation while retaining the qualities that made the original series a television staple.
Further details, including casting, a release date and a confirmed broadcast or streaming home, have yet to be announced.
