Things are about to get considerably messier in It Gets Worse, the upcoming comedy series from A24, which has unveiled its first official trailer ahead of its November premiere on Paramount+.

Starring Andrew Scott (Fleabag, All of Us Strangers) and Lena Dunham (Girls), the six-episode series is created by comedian and writer Leo Reich, who also takes on the leading role.

The series follows three twenty-somethings whose lives take an increasingly chaotic turn after being evicted from their apartment. With little money, no clear direction and uncertain futures, the trio find themselves navigating dead-end jobs, complicated relationships and deteriorating mental health, all while attempting to hold on to the friendships keeping them together.

The newly released trailer introduces viewers to Ethan (Reich), who is seeking a simpler, more carefree existence. During a therapy session with Scott’s character, Ethan explains that he wants to spend more time with his friends and live without constantly worrying about what comes next. However, judging by the events that follow, finding that sense of balance might prove considerably harder than expected.

Alongside Ethan, the story follows Abi (Emily Fairn), who begins questioning her own character, and Sam (Olive Gray), whose romantic relationship appears to be moving at a rather alarming pace. As their personal circumstances become increasingly complicated, the three friends attempt to make sense of adulthood while everything around them seems to unravel.

Adding another distinctive element to the series, author Zadie Smith provides the narration, while the ensemble cast also features Gary Beadle, Simon Haines, Sean Delaney, Dane Williams, India Mullen, Safia Oakley-Green, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Blake Harrison and Nicole Sadie Sawyerr, among others.

Mounia Akl directs the series, with Rose Garnett, Piers Wenger, Harpa Manku and Reich serving as executive producers.

It Gets Worse has already made its debut in the UK on Channel 4, with the series also arriving on Canadian streaming platform Crave on October 22.

The series will make its Paramount+ debut on November 6, 2026, bringing its distinctly uncomfortable, darkly comedic take on friendship, relationships and the realities of finding your way through your twenties to a wider audience.

If the trailer is anything to go by, growing up isn’t necessarily getting easier – and sometimes, things really do get worse.
