Disney is moving forward with a new live-action film centered on Medusa, the legendary figure from Greek mythology. Screenwriter Michael Montemayor has been tapped to write the first draft of the original project, which is being developed by Seven Bucks Productions under its overall deal with Disney.
Medusa is one of Greek mythology’s most recognizable and terrifying figures. Known for her serpent-covered hair and deadly gaze, she was one of three Gorgon sisters, alongside Euryale and Stheno. According to mythology, anyone who looked directly into Medusa’s eyes would be instantly turned to stone. Her story ultimately ended at the hands of the Greek hero Perseus, who beheaded her and later gave her head to the goddess Athena to place upon her shield.
Fans of Clash of the Titans will undoubtedly remember Medusa as one of the franchise’s most memorable villains. Her terrifying presence and iconic battle with Perseus made her a standout adversary, arguably stealing the spotlight from other mythical creatures such as the Kraken and Calibos.
Specific details about Montemayor’s vision for the upcoming film remain under wraps. However, the project is expected to offer a fresh and distinctive interpretation of the famous mythological character.
Despite Seven Bucks’ involvement, the film is not currently being developed as a starring vehicle for Dwayne Johnson. Johnson will instead produce the project alongside his Seven Bucks partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Melissa Fried will oversee the film for the production company. Matt Smith is also attached as a producer through Electro Corduroy Entertainment.
Montemayor has already established a strong relationship with Disney’s live-action division. He recently worked on the upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled, directed by Michael Gracey and scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 31, 2028. He is also attached to Stepsisters, an original live-action spinoff of Cinderella, with Akiva Schaffer set to direct and produce.
Beyond his Disney projects, Montemayor recently sold an original romantic comedy titled Court Date to Netflix, with Berlanti/Schechter Films producing.
With a legendary character like Medusa at the center of the story, Disney has an opportunity to bring a darker and potentially visually spectacular corner of Greek mythology to the big screen. More details about the project, including its cast, director, and release plans, have yet to be announced.
