Khalid is everywhere at the moment, featuring in some of the biggest tracks on the charts. So you can guess that fans were pretty excited when Khalid dropped his new record “Sun City”. The first single was the song “Better”, which is a midtempo, seductive ballad, showcasing Khalid’s versatility perfectly. This EP exposes his ability to be able to switch between R&B and pop effortlessly.
The brilliant thing about this EP is no two tracks are the same, and I guess that was always going to be the case if you were to take into account his previous singles, that range from R&B, to pop to EDM. I have to say “Sun City” is pretty hard to fault, from Khalid’s skillful songwriting to the vast creative production, it’s new age R&B at it’s finest.
My favourite song on the EP has to be “Saturday Night”. It’s a laid-back feel on instrumentals, as Khalid sings about connecting with his woman more than her parents do, mentioning each and every one of her current problems. I love the flow of this track, and the infectious melodies, they’re so impressive making for an immediate radio hit.
The next fave of mine is easily “Motion”. It’s a light and glimmery slow jam that features Khalid without any vocal error whatsoever. His voice is sharp and the melody is clean, it’s very similar to what we’ve heard from R&B singer Miguel. Khalid is a pop star, who is capable on the R&B end, it’s just not where he’s most comfortable. The “Sun City” EP is a collection of 7 tracks, all reminiscent of the pop era we currently live in.
