Exclusive Interview with Former X-Factor Contestant, Josh Olsen

Though somewhat new to the LA music scene, Josh has been singing and songwriting his entire life. His talents were fostered by his musically-gifted family, who often spent time writing songs together and performing at their church. Keeping family in mind, Josh and his twin brother later took their high school band to great heights, moving to Austin and even auditioning for The X-Factor. Wanting to explore music as independent artists, the two later split, and Josh decided to make the brave leap to LA. Hitting the ground running, recording his own music as well as co-writing songs for Fuller House star Juan Pablo Di Pace. Today, he is his own artist, constantly coming up with new music in all places from the shower to his dreams and eager to share it with the world.

Hi Josh Welcome to OLC! So tell me how did you discover your passion for music and who were some of your biggest influences?

My mother was a singer songwriter, so music was a part of my life from a very early age. I started singing with my mom at my grandfather’s church when I was 10 years old. I was a really shy kid, and music gave me an outlet to express myself. After the first time I sang to an audience, I was hooked. I had so many musical influences growing up. I listened to a lot of Coldplay, One Republic, Maroon 5, and many others. I can get bored with music, so I’m constantly looking for new artists and sounds, so I am really a melting pot of so many artists.

You spent some time making music with your twin brother, what made you decide, that you wanted to continue to follow your passion solo?

When you are twins, you do everything together from birth, so there was a part of me that always craved my own identity apart from my brother, but I think the main reason was that we wanted to accomplish different things, and had different musical styles.

You became a contestant on the hit show X-Factor, can you tell me what that experience was like?

Yes, It was so much fun. It was my first time doing anything like that. The producers of the show found my brother and I on YouTube and asked us to audition. Our first audition was in front of the celebrity judges and an 8,000 people audience. It was overall a great experience that I learned so much from. I think just affirmed for me that I was meant to do music for a career.

You have a brand new track out called “Won’t Say I Love You”, Can you tell me what inspired it?

Most of the EP is about a hard relationship I got out of, but “I Won’t Say I Love You” was really about my fear of being vulnerable in a new relationship. We needed one more song for the EP, and I wasn’t really sure what it was going to be, so Bart and I started brainstorming on concepts one night, and the song is exactly what I was going through at the time we wrote it. I had just met someone and was not wanting to be the first to say those three words. I was hurt in my last relationship and was doing anything I could to protect myself from that happening again.

You have a brand new EP out called “The Beginning Of The End”, what can your fans expect from it?

They can expect a lot of pain and heart in these songs, layered with some fun and playful beats. The album overall is just a really nice easy to listen to Album. Whether you’re going through a break up, happy in your relationship, or content being single, there’s something for everyone.

What inspired the title for the EP?

The title really describes the album as a whole. I was ending a hard time in my life, but beginning a new chapter.

Can you see yourself getting back together with your brother to make music again in the future in some form, whether writing, or performing?

I can definitely see us writing together again, and you never know, he might have to come sing with me on tour one of these days.

What does the rest of 2020 hold for you?

2020 has been a really good time to be creative and just take a beat. I think the rest of 2020 is going to give me time to make plans and start getting ready for when venues and other opportunities come knocking.
