INsiders Guide: Joséphine, Scratch, Blushing, King Park, BIA, Dawson Fuss, G.L.A.M., Big Kill…

Joséphine gives listeners a taste of power-pop.

Mixing sensuality and empowerment together in her music, the Persian-American singer/songwriter weaves a multitude of influences in her music, inspired by artists from the U.S., U.K., and Middle East. There is a sultriness like Lana Del Rey and Amy Winehouse found in her sound, embedded with poetic lyricism, much like artists from her Middle Eastern upbringing. This is evident in her elegant music video “BabyGirl.”

Anchored with husky vocals, punchy piano keys and a hook-y chorus, Joséphine’s video breathes a Madonna-esque quality that’s both charming and seductive. Characterized by old-Hollywood-esque decadent scenes within a hotel, it details the fuzzy romance between her and the non-committed lover in the song.

“In 2019, I was wandering around Jaffa (South Tel Aviv), Israel, one evening and happened across this Hotel called the Inta Gay Hotel (yes really). I walked in and saw they were doing a live model sketching of this handsome man perched upon a gorgeous deep burgundy chaise lounge, with string lights draped around him as guests drew him. Immediately I knew this was ‘BabyGirl,’” says Joséphine. “The entire hotel had this beautiful vintage Art Deco aesthetic feel that made me feel like I was coming home. The owners Kobi & Ziv became great friends—they saw the vision and had a lot of faith in me. I’m proud to say I was able to create art in a place I love, with strangers who became family, showcasing Israeli creatives and highlighting their work.”

Determined to end summer on a feel-good note, rising artist Scratch has delivered a blissful bubbler that explores the feeling of young love; accompanied alongside Dejour, ‘Solider’ provides a route of sweet escape as the darker nights draw in.STREAM/DOWNLOAD: SCRATCH – SOLDIERBacked with a dancehall-inspired production courtesy of E Double, ‘Solider’ encapsulates that initial tender spark when getting to know a newly-found love interest. Sugar-coated with his butter-like tone and bouncing melodies, ‘Solider’ is fit for those hazy summer days out with your loved ones. Although winter is approaching, Scratch has still managed to deliver a wheel-up worthy sizzler that bound to push those fall blues away. Accompanied alongside Dejour for an assisting verse, the pair demonstrate their musical chemistry throughout. Seamlessly gliding over the acoustic-led beat, Scratch’s infectious hook matched with Dejour’s effortless swagger creates an unsurpassed banger!

Austin, Texas’, Blushing today announce their signing to Kanine Records, and share the lead-off single “Blame” from upcoming album Possessions (due February 18th, 2022). The track is an immersive reintroduction to Blushing’s heavy brand of dream pop and harnesses a veritable who’s who of established and upcoming shoegaze scenesters; most notably in the distinctive vocals of Miki Berenyi from Brit legends Lush. This testament to trans-atlantic mutual appreciation began when Blushing covered “Out Of Control” for a Lush tribute album in 2018, catching the ear of Berenyi, who tweeted her appreciation, and a friendship was born. As the tracking sessions for Possessions took place throughout 2020, the band approached Berenyi about the possibility of her collaborating on a song and were thrilled to find that she shared their excitement to work together. The track and lyric sheet were digitally whisked off to London with the request that Berenyi add any vocals she would like. What she returned was a beautifully creative melding of harmonies and counter melodies that takes the original song into striking new territory.

King Park has been turning out mercurial, high-contrast indie rock since they released their 2017 breakout track, “Stay.” Gritty and lush, the quartet’s sound mirrors the antitheses of their hometown, Hamilton, Ontario: on the one hand, blue-collar and raw, and, on the other, artful and lovely.

Following their self-released debut EP, The Light I Can’t See, King Park won the 97.7 HTZ-FM’s Rock Search 2018 contest, which helped launch other Canadian rock groups like Finger Eleven, the Trews, and Glorious Sons. The basement-to-ceiling intensity of their live show has since continued to earn them a growing and devoted following across southern Ontario.

At the heart of the group you’ll find childhood friends and musical co-conspirators Timon Moolman (vocals, guitar) and Tyler Heemskerk (bass, vocals), rounded out more recently by guitarist Brenden Campbell and the animated Nate Wall on drums.

Sneak peeks of their upcoming 2021 full-length, Everett, show the quartet exploiting its strengths. Guitars chime, drums thwack, and Moolman’s broken-up baritone—which often veers into shouted speak-sing—is ornamented one minute by barber shop harmonies, and the next by barstool gang vocals. Songs like “This is the End,” “Stuck in the Middle,” and the title track set up camp in that familiar moment after life has fallen apart, and before a way forward seems possible. King Park’s Everett promises a collection of elegies for ordinary, apocalyptic losses.

multi-platinum-certified Boston-born and Los Angeles-based artist BIA releases the music video for her new song “Can’t Touch This” via Epic Records. Watch HERE.

The video, directed by BenMarc, is a new track from BIA’s recently released For Certain Deluxe Album. The track produced by London Jae, DJ Pharoah and IROCC, features a sample of Kelis’ 2003 smash hit “Milkshake.” “Can’t Touch This” is a fan favorite from the album with critics like VIBE Magazine citing “The Boston-bred rapper uses her soft, raspy tone to let everyone know her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.”

Right now, BIA is lighting up venues across the country as direct support on Don Toliver’s Life Of A Don Tour. Check out the remaining dates below.

Recently, BIA made headlines when she performed as one of Rihanna’s special guests at the Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3. It’s available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. She also took the stage at the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards and gathered two nominations in the categories of “Best Collaboration” and “Song of the Year.” Not to mention, she’s fast closing in on 1 billion streams to date. BIA asserts herself as hip-hop’s new leading lady on For Certain Deluxe Album.

Through hypnotizing melodies layered over a diverse array of instrumental arrangements, and his signature silken vocals, Dawson proves that it’s possible to create art that is deeply personal and equally relatable. “Never Really Knew” touches on the loss of a friend to suicide and how grief is incredibly nuanced and even harder to process when you’re so young. Dawson then wrote the upbeat track, “Confused” after a past relationship with his ex fell through. “Being my first relationship, I felt some kind of obligation to feel a certain way about my partner that didn’t come naturally,” Dawson shares.

edge of adolescence captures and portrays Dawson’s personal growth and maturation into self discovery, which is something many can relate to and will enjoy listening to.

Continuing to build serious heat, West Coast producer, rapper and songwriter G.L.A.M serves new single ‘SWEET FIYAH’.

Showcasing her polished versatility, ‘SWEET FIYAH’ sees G.L.A.M. produce soulful, honeyed vocals over woozy piano stabs, an intoxicating blend of organic instrumentation with left field flourishes – as she lyrically explores the nerves and excitement of a blossoming romance. Driven by her signature blazing percussive elements and addictive basslines, this grooved-out offering continues to solidify G.L.A.M.’s knack for crafting rich, experimental soundscapes whilst maintaining sharp musical identity.

Speaking on the track, G.L.A.M. states “It’s about a girl having feels for another girl and gambling internally with if she should tell this girl, or keep it to herself. Despite the chemistry she’s unsure but it’s lowkey burning her up inside lmao hence “SWEET FIYAH”.

With recent release ‘START SH!T’ dropping to the acclaim of COLORSXSTUDIOS, GIRLS ARE AWESOME and RAYDAR, ‘SWEET FIYAH’ marks the second offering from G.L.A.M’s anticipated project Audacity, produced, written and recorded by herself

between her homes in Los Angeles and NY – said to embody the versality she adopted from West to East.

We are writing to you to share Except For U,” our second release as Big Kill.

It’s a piece of pure exploration and flow between two friends down in the basement of a warehouse on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

It was in these early days that we discovered the use of a signature process – running beautiful sounds through a long-forgotten custom build console from the UK filled with pine needles – squeezing them together, pushing them to their breaking point and oftentimes past that.

Except for U captures the glitter of pop production and the sound of mechanical failure. It’s the sound of technology not being able to contain something so powerful, so intangible, so big.

You’re 13 in your childhood home, looking around one last time before you move away. You’re in your mid-30s, someone said ‘divorce’ and the next thing you know, you’re signing the papers. And it feels so stupid to experience vast feelings in an average situation that billions of people have gone through.

We hope that you can connect to the emotions we captured in this track.
