17-year-old Sky Katz delivers stunning pop-punk perfection in her energetic visual for new single “Breakup Song,” co-written and executive produced by Joel Madden (Good Charlotte), co-produced by Halo Boy and Zakk Cervini. This high energy record fits Sky like a glove and matches her history of catchy wordplay with newfound rock tendencies. Following her first heartbreak, the burgeoning artist role-plays with her therapist and imagines herself into a new universe where she becomes the most powerful version of herself – full on rockstar.
“The whole video concept was actually my idea! I came up with the treatment and narrative after we finished the song because when we were writing and recording it I could just see the vision so clearly already. I’m such a visual person and had so much fun making this.” – Sky Katz

Hi Sky, welcome to OLC! You’ve achieved huge success in music and acting, so how were
you discovered?
I got the opportunity at age 11 to audition for America’s Got Talent and was able to
perform on television in front of the judges! From there I met my current manager who
suggested I try acting and introduced me to a talent agent. One of my first auditions was
for Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home and after several callbacks I got the role! It was a life
changing experience.
What made you want to audition for ‘America’s Got Talent’? And what was your
experience like on the show? I bet your audition would have been daunting?
I always love rapping and performing in front of anyone who would watch me. I loved
the show and submitted a tape without telling my family. One day my dad got a call
from the producers and he thought it was one of his friends pranking him! The
experience was incredible to perform on television and impress Simon Cowell was
surreal! I loved every minute of it!
So tell me about your new single “Breakup Song”, what inspired you to write this single?
Breakup Song is about reaching your breaking point in a relationship. It’s about putting in
so much effort just to receive mistreatment in return. I wanted to capture the emotions
and roller coaster a breakup can take you on!
It’s co-written by the incredible Joel Madden, how did you meet and how did this
collaboration happen?
I was so lucky to have met Joel madden a few months ago. My lawyer Kenny Meisalas
made the introduction and we clicked right away. Meeting him and working with him has
been life changing and complete honor, to say the least.
I love the energy of not only this song but also the music video, who came up with the
idea for it, it has the vibes of the old school punk videos of the 90’s?
I, myself came up with the plan for the Breakup Song music video, and I couldn’t have
executed it without the one and only Director Erik Rojas and his team!
Do you have plans to release an EP or album and if so anything you can tell us about?
I’m planning on releasing a dope EP later this year! It won’t let down and will 100% be worth the wait. I cant waiiiit to complete recording it and for fans to hear it.
Tell me about your latest endeavor, Netflix’s ‘Surviving Summer’, tell me what it’s about
and who you play?
I play the main character Summer Torres. She is this rebellious teen from Brooklyn who
is sent to live with family friends in Australia. Despite her best efforts to cause chaos she
falls in love with the town the people and surfing!
How did you prepare for your character?
Preparing for my character Summer was super fun! She is a layered character with tons
of depth. Seeing her storylines unfold and playing the emotional journey she went on
was awesome.
You filmed this in Australia I believe? Was that difficult to do especially with the way the
world is at the moment?
I would say filming Surviving Summer in Australia was a bit of a challenge. I was by
myself across the world from my family, most of my friends, and just my usual everyday
life! But I must say, the cast and crew made it seem like home there. Sometimes home is
a place, sometimes it can be people who aren’t even family.
How did you enjoy your time in Australia?
Australia was AWESOME! I miss everything about there so much. No joke, I think about
it every single day. Filming there was a dream, hanging out with the family I’ve made
there was so fun, I could go on. like I said.. everything about it!
So not only are you a great actor and singer, you’re also a talented rapper, who inspired
you to begin rapping and who were some of your biggest influences?
I’m very thankful for my start in rap, because it has led me to the genres I’m doing today!
Some of my biggest influences growing up were Nicki Minaj, biggie smalls, Lil Wayne, Jay-z, etc.
You have such a diverse passion for music, is that sort of what you want to do with your
music career, release music of all genres and not just stick to one?
I one hundred percent want to release music that doesn’t exactly just fit one particular
genre. I always want to have a great range in the music I create!
Who is an artist you would love to have the opportunity to work with and why?
Whenever I get asked the question “who is your dream collab?” My answer is always the
same: Willow Smith. That’d be so sick. She is so dope and brings so much energy and
passion to everything she does. I so admire her.
What does the rest of 2022 hold for you?
My goal for this year is to continue releasing music and music videos and to be in the
studio so much it practically becomes my second home. I’m hoping to perform a bit more
than I have these last few years.. Overall, I’m hoping to work tons !
