Reports have emerged that ‘Red Notice’ director Rawson Marshall Thurber is developing a live-action film adaptation of the popular 80’s sci-fi animated series ‘Voltron’. Several studios are in a bidding war to pick the film up including Warner Bros. Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Amazon Studios. The live-action ‘Voltron’ movie will be directed by Thurber from a screenplay he’ll co-write with Ellen Shanman.
For those who are not familiar with the animation, the ‘Voltron’ franchise is based on Toei Animation’s mecha anime series titled Beast King GoLion, which aired 52 episodes from 1981-1982. It first gained international recognition when it was adapted by World Events Productions and ABC into an English animated series that ran on-air from 1984-1985.
The story revolves around five young space pilots that control Robot Lions, which together combined form a super robot. The shows success spawned several spin offs, video games and a huge line of popular toys.
