INsiders Guide: KILE J, Ryan Meeking, STVB, VALA, Yiigaa, James Alphonse, MILCK, Claire Guerreso, xiv, Kihyun, Meg Mac….

KILE J (they/them) is a proud non-binary artist and performer, based in New York City. Originally from Houston Texas, Kile moved to New York to explore their creative talents, and since then has worked with some of the top influencers in the industry. The multi-dimensional artist has many skills under their belt, including comedy, acting, and most significantly music.

Dedicated to creating work that unapologetically highlights the experiences and nuances of queer people of color, the debut EP Honey is sensationally vulnerable and encouragingly heartfelt. Serving as a therapeutic outlet, the EP helped them tackle feelings of shame and discomfort, eventually leading them to find self-love. Bursting with lush sugary harmonies that counteract the bittersweet lyrics, the songs speak authentically of their personal experiences. Taking lines directly from journal entries and text messages, Kile revealed, “I found strength singing words that caused me pain, over beautiful warm instrumentals.”

Speaking on the EP, the artist explains, “There are moments where you can only understand if you’re a part of the culture, and there’s also moments where I feel everyone can relate to it in some way.” They continue, “The underlying theme of the project is to tell black queer love stories authentically; not only ones about loving others, but ones about loving yourself as well.”

The title track “Honey” delightfully showcases Kile’s vibey sound, with it being a fusion of southern music, modern pop and R&B. Smoothly soulful and trickled with encouraging sentiment, the track is a shimmer of soundscapes reflecting warmth, comfort and hope, as they detail the shame placed on people who are trying to love themselves in a world that’s forcing them into hiding.

As a performer, their work has gotten plenty of buzz, with their musical project Trak Joy being ranked on the 25 best songs of the week by CMJ. They were also a featured correspondent for Buzzfeed where they talked news and pop culture while breaking out of gender binaries, as well as being named a finalist at YAAAS FEST: an LGBTQ comedy competition in New York. Kile’s work is currently featured on Hunger Magazine, Teen Vogue, Redbull.com, Buzzfeed, and Afropunk, to name a few.

Hot on the heels of his rambunctious single “Better!”, London-based songwriter-producer Ryan Meeking presents his epic debut EP, Coalesce: a journeying tome of indie-pop mastery. Written in the solace of his own studio, ‘Coalesce’ is a collection of sonic adventures and mood. Inspired by the complexity of friendships, infatuation, deceit and despondence; the thoughtfully curated six-track EP evokes hope and acute awareness of the life around us, with every song presented in its most raw and heightened state. Playing with these concepts, Meeking concocts a one-of-a-kind space for each of his songs. He shares, “Every song is its own environment, its own conversation, its own emotion, its own world for exploring. Each of them captures one moment in time – one chance to connect.”

Meeking’s unique brand of catchy and cutting-edge indie-pop – evoking comparisons to Beck, Jack Garrat and Alt-J – is boldly on show throughout the EP, demonstrating his wide-ranging skills and influences. Co-produced and engineered with fellow Australian Sam Swain (Obscura Hail, Josh Cashman, RAT!hammock) and mastered by Randy Merrill (Beck, Nirvana, Silk Sonic, Mark Ronson), Coalesce hits hard, diligently and purposefully nailing its every target. From the playful flairs of the up-beat “Endless Run” to the conflicted frustration of “Jealous” and towering synths of “Mind Reader”, the EP is an amalgamation of emotion and realism. “Ordinary” embodies the twilight of anguish. Modestly clean, yet stirring, with a subtle glimmer of hope, the track captures a seductively dire warmth, urging you to engage in life’s darker moments and truly see life for all its beauty. Finally, “Golden Boy”, defined by Meeking as, “A contemplation on the end of oneself,” echoes with the styling of a cinematic score before breaking like a wave into an unstoppable, ocean-parting groove.

After his work with artists such as Gossling and Whitaker touring Australia, the US and UK, Meeking’s solo music emerged in 2021, quickly gaining recognition from playlisting tastemakers and major publications like Rolling Stone, PileRats, Variance and Atwood Magazine. It’s no wonder given his experience – his songwriting racking up millions of streams as well as featuring in a slew of global television series. Now, Meeking’s Coalesce EP brings his talent to the forefront with a carved initial in the stone: “RM ‘22”.

This is Steve Bosch, frontman of indie rock project White Lightning. I’d like to introduce you to my new solo project, STVB.

My first single Made Up My Mind blends trap, hip-hop, and pop. It’s about the feeling that a bold, undeniable new relationship is about to unfold. The song was inspired by my relationship with my now-fiancée.

You can listen to “Made Up My Mind” out now on streaming platforms everywhere, or watch the official music video on YouTube.

All the highs cover the lows / But in the low that we know / We can hold each other tight

This song initially began as a piano-driven latin dance tune and evolved into a more modern pop song, though still maintaining its danceable groove. Through this song, I want to inspire people to dance and to fall in love.

I look forward to sharing this new era of my music with you. Watch for my 4-song EP out later this year.Thank you for listening,STVB

She has garnered support from award-winning DJ and producer, Conducta who remixed her single Closer, naming it as one of his favourite tracks of the year. The 2-step banger was widely shared by the likes of DJ Mag, GRM Daily and Trench Magazine.

James Alphonse has toured Ontario, Canada with different groups, winning awards at various universities and opening for bands like The Trews. Moreover, he has been nominated for and won awards at the Hamilton Music Awards in the Best New Artist or Group of the Year category. All of this has been aided by his mentors Nick Blagona (The Police, Deep Purple, Beegees) and Mark Daum (inventor of the piantar). His newest mentors are Andre Kaden Black (Fefe Dobson, Francesco Yates) and Tal Vaisman (working in a variety of capacities with groups like 21 Pilots and Imagine Dragons), who have produced James’ debut EP as a solo artist. More recently, James Alphonse has been a finalist in the Unsigned Only competition and a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition.

Advocate, singer-songwriter and producer MILCK shares latest single “Power,” a track that exudes confidence and inner strength. The song was co-written by MILCK and co-produced by Stefan Lit (One Direction, Andy Grammer, Galantis), Ben Antelis, Clover, and Lena Leon. Currently, “Power” is set to be featured as part of ABC Network’s programming for Women’s History Month, celebrating Women’s stories within their current shows. For MILCK, releasing “Power” has been a journey of acceptance, love and trusting the process. The song’s origins began nearly two years ago, at a time when MILCK felt deeply connected to the lyrics, but she was in the midst of struggling with her mental health, feeling stressed and burnt out.

“It was time to heal,” says MILCK. “I decided to stop striving for the external accolades that I thought would give me power, but instead required me to abandon too much of myself: Major record label deal. Family approval. Social media numbers… The true accolade is seeing my life as a gift, and honoring who I am now. Hence the lyrics: ‘You’re so beautiful I won’t leave you again.’”

Singer/songwriter Claire Guerreso is thrilled to release her new single “CEO” that is out now and featured on Wonderland Magazine“CEO” was just debuted on the TV show, The Equalizer. Claire says ,“CEO is a badass song that’s all about being a boss and feeling empowered.” Claire Guerreso combines all genres into a powerful mixture of her own song creations. biosphere is an Asian-Canadian, 21-year-old composer and producer based in Toronto. He initially experimented with the lo-fi/hip hop sound but has recently ventured into R&B, soul, and orchestral styles.  Classically trained in piano and a saxophone player from a young age, he gradually became inspired to compose music of his own. His music is strongly influenced by his classical roots and his many years playing in a jazz environment.

This brilliant rhetorical question sets the scene for the introduction to Meg Mac in 2022.

For those familiar with Meg’s impressive past releases, it hints at what has occupied her in her time out of the spotlight. And for those unfamiliar, it epitomises the thoughtful artistry of this inimitable artist as she takes her craft to a new, higher level.

Her new single ‘Is It Worth Being Sad’ is a stunning offering, bold in its scope and execution, yet humble and intimate at the same time. Produced by electrifying producer duo The DonutsKendrick Lamar, H.E.R. – it finds this maverick delving into the depths of inner darkness to chart a forward path.

Opening with a haunting vocal loop, Meg Mac’s vocal arrives with a question—“tell me is it worth being sad about now / now I’ve had so much time”. The soft heartbeat of a kick drum pulses the record forward to the explosive chorus, and her heart-breaking intentions become apparent, with each word forced to its emotional conclusion. ‘Is It Worth Being Sad’ stands out on its own as the artist’s more personal, pointed creation.

If the song cuts deep, that’s perhaps because Meg Mac poured so much of herself into its writing, a tale of trauma, escape, and re-discovery. “I had just run away to the country,” she recalls. “I was running away from my troubles. I was living in peace and quiet finally and really thought I’d figured it all out, and it was all smooth sailing ahead. It was the start of sorting out my life. This song was like my first step—I didn’t know it then, though.”

The sonic grandeur that shrouds ‘Is It Worth Being Sad’ contrasts with the neat simplicity of her methods. “I recorded myself singing the chords into the loop pedal,” she recalls. “Once I had that going, I started humming over the top, trying to find a melody that I liked. As soon as I found the first line, I kept going with that mood.”

“Jumped in the studio with GRiZ and we made another super banger!!,” says Big Gigantic saxophonist and producer Dom. “It’s always so much fun getting in the studio with GRiZ, we work so well together and always seem to come up with something fun and fresh. BINNY is a bedroom pop artist born and bred in Maryland. Having sung before he could even talk, BINNY’s musicality runs deep in his veins. Growing up in a family of musicians, he learned piano from the early age of six, before self-teaching the guitar and eventually going on to songwriting and producing.

“After Hours” is the indulgent new track inspired by the challenges faced when trying to find the balance between work and relationships. Produced and written himself, with mixing by his brother, Brandon Lim and mastering by Jonas W. Karlsson (John Legend, Jhene Aiko, Tinashe, FLETCHER), the song offers a flicker of sensual euphoria, floating with themes of connection and romance, and capturing the essence of escape you feel when you’re with someone you care about. Sonically stimulating, the tune is dripping with silky vocals, dreamy synths and 808s; aligning with BINNY’s previous releases.

Admitting how both listening and writing music is equally therapeutic, BINNY hopes that by conveying his true emotions and thoughts may act as a form of medication for audiences. He also strives to represent Asian Americans in pop culture and mainstream music, something that he feels lacks recognition. He shares, “I hope to be a part of that change and be an inspiration for other Asian Americans who want to pursue music.”

BINNY is also a fashion enthusiast, using style to express himself. The singer shares, “It’s also important for me that my music is translated visually in what I’m wearing.” Aside from songwriting, BINNY also grew up doing theater in school and took part in numerous productions. In college, he was a part of an award-winning a cappella group that got to compete in the International Championships of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) on Broadway.

Rose: You Are Who You Eat is a true story set to music. Artist John Jarboe writes:

In 2018 my aunt revealed I had a twin in the womb.

She said, “You know you had a twin in the womb?”

I didn’t know.

She said, “You ate her. That’s why you are the way you are.”

This was a lot to swallow.

My aunt’s pronouncement that my gender stemmed from an act of fetal cannibalism is the seed for this piece: a celebration and “digestion” of this newfound twin, who I later learned would have been named “Rose.”

A shrine of music, image, objects, and text, Rose brings together a team of queer artists, including composers and musicians Emily Bate, Daniel de Jesús, Pax Ressler, and Be Steadwell with director Mary Tuomanen, to tell the legend of John and Rose. Jarboe, known as the founding artistic director of the Bearded Ladies Cabaret, explores this tale through musical styles ranging from art song to 1980s pop ballad, elaborate floral-inspired costumes made by Rebecca Kanach, intimate storytelling, and a feast of wordplay. This evening will feature a concert of original songs performed by a live band and set alongside a garden of images made with filmmaker Christopher Ash. After this event, the project will continue to evolve into films and an art installation in which fellow genderqueers can nourish their own idiosyncratic identities.

Rose first came to life in Jarboe’s Works & Process Artists (WPA) Virtual Commission, an initiative launched by Works & Process in the early days of the pandemic to provide artists with creative and financial support during a period of uncertainty. Working towards shaping a more inclusive, fair, and representative and colorful world, Works & Process commissioned the live performance of Rose and provided the project with a bubble residency at Mount Tremper Arts in fall 2020. In spring 2021 the project also received a Works & Process bubble residency at Bethany Arts Community, made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, which culminated in an in-process performance at the Guggenheim rotunda in one of the first indoor performances permitted by New York State during the pandemic.

Following the Works & Process premiere on March 26, the concert experience of Rose can be seen at CulturalDC’s Source Theatre on April 1-2. Over the next 18 months, CulturalDC will work with Jarboe to realize the evolution of Rose into an immersive, multidisciplinary installation. Conceptualized as an interactive cabinet of curiosities, Rose will be presented in CulturalDC’s Mobile Art Gallery (a shipping container turned moveable art space) in summer 2023. Jarboe will activate the installation with a series of public performances. This is a continuation of growing artistic partnership – in fall 2021, CulturalDC hosted Jarboe and the Bearded Ladies’ Beardmobile for its first appearance outside of Philadelphia. “CulturalDC is thrilled to continue the partnership with John and provide the infrastructure and platform for the Rose team to grow this work,” says Executive Director Kristi Maiselman. “We excel at collaborating with artists who are challenging themselves and the mediums in which they practice. It’s exciting to synthesize John’s deep talents as a performer into a queer interactive installation.”

Following the February release of her first full-length album Awake Sleeper, indie-folk artist Amy Jay unveils the video, “Lucid Dreaming.” The album was profoundly influenced by life in New York City, and Jay found the inspiration for this song during a particularly strange morning commute when, through a half-asleep haze, she faintly picked up the smells of sunscreen and cigarettes.

“It brought me straight back to a specific, vivid, just-like-yesterday memory of a childhood pool party in Miami Lakes where I grew up,” she muses. When it came time to film the video, Jay and director/producer Casey Sincic decided to explore the notion that while we grow up and into ourselves as adults, we continue to carry our childhood selves with us.

Weaving actual home videos into new scenes featuring Jay’s friends’ children, the re-creation of a cherished recollection became its own beautiful memory. “We shot it in one day at Prospect Studio in Brooklyn,” Jay recalls. “The kids made the day fly by; they were incredible and loved every minute of it. We danced the day away; nothing made sense while everything made sense.”

Lola Brooke, one of most definitive, distinct voices in Hip Hop rising out of New York, returns with the release of her latest single, “On My Mind,” produced Semi Beatz [Luh Kel, Bizzy Banks], Tsunami, Trellsettaz & Wmarcos via Team Eighty Productions. Lola’s new offering for 2022 pulls back the curtains to another side of the Brooklyn-born lyricist, showcasing versatility deeply rooted in budding stardom.

Scandinavian based band JANOS is a colourful, genre-bending group made up of Janos Andersson, Aksel Krystad, Håvard Haugland and Kristoffer Sakseide. Pulling elements from an amalgamation of contrasting genres, the band fuses a nostalgic, melancholic vibe with energetic grooves, resulting in feel-good dancey tunes.

Moving to London in 2015, Swedish vocalist and songwriter Andersson set out as a solo artist, gaining experience and exposure playing regular gigs around the city, however relocated to Oslo in 2018. Amping up his musical pursuit, he connected with songwriter and guitarist Haugland and bassist Sakseide over social media, then fellow songwriter, keyboard player and producer, Krystad through playing shows. It was when the pandemic struck, that momentum ramped up with Andersson and Krystad penning songs and recording demos, eventually leading to the musicians forming a band under the name JANOS.

Their new single “JUICEBOX” is the second song from their upcoming EP, which is set to drop in Spring 2022. Fighting the inner conflict of good and bad, the track explores the struggle to not make the wrong choices when enticing opportunities arise. With clear influences from Glass Animals trickling through, “JUICEBOX” is a bouncy full-flavoured pop track with eerie guitars, woozy electronic bass and keys, and a tastefully ear-worming melody.

Recently playing sold out gigs at Salt in Oslo, as well as their track “Sicky/Sticky” being featured on Greta Thunberg`s travels with La Vagabonde, the group are seeing a stack of successes forming swiftly. Having written and produced a large catalogue of new music over the last year, there is a lot to listen out for from JANOS in 2022!

Ceara Cavalieri is a 26 year old singer/songwriter from Southern California. Having graduated from UCLA with a degree in Psychology, Cavalieri has since dedicated herself to pursuing music full time. Her love for music stems from the age of three, where she found her voice and wouldn’t stop singing. In her teenage years she took to songwriting as a way of expressing her thoughts and feelings when her shyness prevented. With 6 single releases under her belt thus far, Cavalieri is carving out her own distinct sound of incredibly infectious and candidly relatable pop rock music. Her latest single, “Damn” was placed on Spotify’s “Teen Beats” playlist and “Fresh Finds” playlist. Ceara also recently collaborated with DJ/Producer EQRIC on two dance singles which were placed on Spotify’s “Dance Brandneu” playlist.
