Director: Darren Aronofsky

Writer: Samuel D. Hunter(screenplay by)

Stars: Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Ty Simpkins, Hong Chau

‘The Whale’ was more then a movie, it was Brendan Fraser, one of Hollywood’s most likable actors, comeback and it has been one of the most heart warming stories of 2022. Fraser plays Charlie, a college writing teacher who never leaves his apartment. He conducts his classes online, disabling his laptop camera so the students can’t see him. Charlie is 600 lbs, and literally eating himself to death. His heart is failing, but he refuses to seek medical attention and his one and only true friend, a woman named Liz (Hong Chau) is his devoted caregiver.

Riddled with health issues and psychological problems, Charlie still embodies a lot of hope. Hope springs from his work as an online English teacher. He loves inspiring students. Also hope that he’ll get to rekindle his relationship with his estranged daughter Ellie (played by Sadie Sink).

Even if you don’t follow Oscar predictions or nominations you still would have heard about how incredible Brendan Fraser is in the role of Charlie. Fraser reaches deep within himself to give what people are saying is the best performance of his career. Sadie Sink like always is phenomenal, and not to mention Hong Chau who also gives an outstanding performance, as both characters make us ponder religion, mortality, and kindness.

‘The Whale’ is Darren Aronofsky’s adaptation of a play written by Samuel D. Hunter. I haven’t seen the play, but for people who experience the emotions detailed in this story, you can tell just how effective Aronofsky was in his retelling. ‘The Whale’ is an exquisite tale that reminds us of a very important life lesson, so gracefully said by Charlie in the film…“People are amazing”.

‘The Whale’ is in cinemas everywhere February 2nd.
