The Review: ‘Theatre Camp’ Is A Hilarious Showcase Brilliantly Crafted By Molly Gordon and Ben Platt

“Theater Camp” is a pitch-perfect mockumentary that takes viewers on a hilarious and authentic journey into the world of young theater geeks. The film, written by Molly Gordon, Ben Platt, Noah Galvin, and Nick Lieberman, is a loving satire that combines the comic sensibility of “Wet Hot American Summer” with the real-world tales of the famed Stagedoor Manor theater camp.

Gordon and Platt star as Rebecca-Diane and Amos, pretentious best friends and teachers at AdirondACTS. When camp director Joan Rubinsky falls into a coma, her clueless son Troy is left in charge of running the camp. As Troy fumbles with the business side of things, Rebecca-Diane and Amos struggle to stage their half-written musical about Joan’s life. The film is filled with eccentric characters and dense, referential dialogue that immerses viewers in this unique theater camp culture.

The film’s strength lies in its attention to detail and its ability to create a real sense of place. Every scene feels like a real moment, and the child actors bring a childlike innocence and passion to their performances. The material they tackle is advanced, but the teachers treat them like little adults, creating a relatable and humorous dynamic. “Theater Camp” is a finely crafted comedic gem that captures the essence of theater camp with its distinct sensibility and sharp editing. It is a charming and funny film that will leave viewers laughing, crying, and feeling delighted. With its talented cast and authentic portrayal of the theater world, it has the potential to become a beloved camp classic.

Theatre Camp is in cinemas September 7.
