The Review: ‘The Nun II’ Creeps In The Right Direction

The Conjuring franchise has defied expectations by staying fresh and successful even after eight films, and The Nun II is here to reaffirm its grip on the hearts of horror enthusiasts. As a direct sequel to The Nun, this installment continues the story five years later, with Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) at a new convent in France, believing she had banished the demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons). However, when church figures start mysteriously dying, it becomes clear that the malevolent entity has returned. Irene, the only surviving church member capable of defeating it, is forced back into her nightmarish past.

The Nun II masterfully weaves an intricate and frightening tale within the Conjuring universe. Akela Cooper, Ian Goldberg, and Richard Niang’s story, improves upon its predecessor with impeccable pacing that keeps viewers engaged. The film skillfully balances nerve-racking scares with moments of levity and even a touch of comedy. Cooper’s influence on the horror genre shines through, given her prior work on films like Malignant and M3GAN, making her a notable name in the horror genre. The script plants seeds early on, building towards a climax that unfolds naturally, offering just enough clues to engage the audience without being heavy-handed.

Director Michael Chaves, known for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, breathes life into The Nun II. Unlike its predecessor, this sequel is enriched with warmth, character development, and emotionally charged performances. Chaves expertly builds tension throughout the film, leading to hair-raising scares that genuinely terrify. He incorporates a remarkable number of practical effects, providing a vintage horror feel while delivering unforgettable frights.

The Nun II introduces new characters who, despite limited backstory, are impressively developed in under two hours. The cast delivers immersive performances, with Jonas Bloquet reprising his role as Frenchie and Katelyn Rose Downey shining as Kate’s daughter, Sophie. Storm Reid brings freshness to the story as Sister Debra, injecting humor and skepticism, while Taissa Farmiga delivers a standout performance as Sister Irene, showcasing her range on screen. Without revealing spoilers, The Nun II certainly improves the Conjuring universe, and without a doubt a vast improvement from the first installment of the Nun films. The tight script, well-rounded characters, and spine-chilling scares elevate it to the same caliber as the core Conjuring films, proving that this horror universe still has much to offer.
